Abstract
Provided herein are compositions, systems, kits, and methods for treating a subject with a disease or condition by administering a composition comprising fullerenes to the subject such that H2S is generated in said subject. In certain embodiments, the disease or condition is associated with inflammation and/or below normal H2S levels. In certain embodiments, the fullerenes are polyhydroxy fullerenes (PHFs).

1 . A method of treating a subject with a disease or condition comprising: administering a composition comprising fullerenes to said subject with said disease or condition such that H 2 S is generated in said subject.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said disease or condition is associated with inflammation and/or below normal H2S levels in said subject.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering reduces or eliminates at least one symptom of said disease or condition.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes comprises polyhydroxy fullerenes.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes in said composition are all one type of fullerene.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes in said composition are two or more types of fullerenes.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes in said composition are all one type of fullerene selected from the group consisting of: C 60 (OH) 9 O 7 Na 6 ; C 60 (OH) 11 O 8 Na 5 ; C 60 (OH) 11 O 12 Na 8 ; C 60 (OH) 11 O 20 Na 10 K 6 ; C 60 (OH) 6 O 4 Na 4 ; C 60 (OH) 20 O 8 Na 4 ; C 60 (OH) 10 O 13 Na 6 ; C 60 (OH) 4 O 14 Na 17 ; C 60 (OH) 13 O 4 Na 3 ; C 60 (OH) 10 ; C 60 (OH) 22-24 ; C 60 (OH) 36 ; C 60 (OH) 44 ; C 60 O 13 Na 14 ; Gd@C 82 (OH) 15 O 12 Na 5 ; Gd 3 N@C 80 (OH) 13 O 9 Na 6 ; C 60 (OH) 11 O 8 S 8 Na 5 ; C 60 (OH) 11 (SH) 5 O 8 Na 5 ; C 60 C 12 N 4 H 24 ; and C 60 C 12 N 6 H 30 O 12 .

The method of claim 1 , wherein said fullerenes are one or more compounds according to the formula C 2n (OH) t (SH) u (NH 2 ) v (COOH) w (COOM) x O y M z , wherein M is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, transition metal, post-transition metal, lanthanide or actinide, n is a number ranging from 10 to 270; and t, u, v, w, x, y and z can range from 0 to the total number of carbon atoms present in the cage.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said composition comprises a food product.
11 . The method of claim 6 , wherein said food product comprises carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

The method of claim 10 , wherein said food product is in a form selected from the group consisting of: mayonnaise, margarine, low fat spread, yoghurt, a fruit smoothie, a protein smoothie, a cheese spread, processed cheese, a dairy dessert, a flavored milk, cream, a fermented milk product, cheese, butter, a condensed milk product, an ice cream mix, a soy product, pasteurized liquid egg, a bakery product, a confectionary product, confectionary bar, chocolate bar, high fat bar, energy bar, liquid emulsion, powder, spray dried powder, freeze dried powder, pudding, a gel, a gel concentrate, a liquid drink, and jelly.
13 . A method comprising: contacting a sulfur-containing compound or thiol-containing compound, with a composition comprising fullerenes in vitro such that H2S is generated.
14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising capturing at least some of said H2S that is generated.
15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said fullerenes in said composition are all one type of fullerene.
16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said fullerenes in said composition are two or more types of fullerenes.
17 . A composition or article of manufacture comprising: a food product, wherein said food product comprises a composition comprising fullerenes.
18 . The composition or article of manufacture of claim 17 , wherein said food product comprises carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
19 . The composition or article of manufacture of claim 17 , wherein said food product is in a form selected from the group consisting of: mayonnaise, margarine, low fat spread, yoghurt, a fruit smoothie, a protein smoothie, a cheese spread, processed cheese, a dairy dessert, a flavored milk, cream, a fermented milk product, cheese, butter, a condensed milk product, an ice cream mix, a soy product, pasteurized liquid egg, a bakery product, a confectionary product, confectionary bar, chocolate bar, high fat bar, energy bar, liquid emulsion, powder, spray dried powder, freeze dried powder, pudding, a gel, a gel concentrate, a liquid drink, and jelly.
20 . The composition or article of manufacture of claim 17 , wherein said fullerenes in the food product comprise polyhydroxy fullerenes.
21 . The composition or article of manufacture of claim 17 , wherein said fullerenes in said food product are all one type of fullerene.
22 . The composition or article of manufacture of claim 17 , wherein said fullerenes in said food production are two or more types of fullerenes.
