Abstract

A spinal implant includes a distal portion configured for penetrating tissue. A proximal portion includes a drive surface, a guide surface and a retention surface. The surfaces being disposed in a serial configuration. The retention surface is engageable with a surface of a surgical instrument to define a retention interface. Instruments, systems, constructs and methods are disclosed.

An implant comprising a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis between opposite proximal and distal ends, the proximal end including a head, the head defining a socket, the socket including a first cavity, a second cavity and a third cavity, the second cavity being disposed between the first cavity and the third cavity, the socket including a gap between the first cavity and the second cavity, the gap defining a maximum diameter of the socket. 
     
     
         22 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the socket is a blind hole. 
     
     
         23 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the shaft is non-cannulated. 
     
     
         24 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the third cavity is spaced apart from the distal end. 
     
     
         25 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the second cavity is tapered from the gap to the third cavity. 
     
     
         26 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the third cavity is tapered from the second cavity to a fourth cavity. 
     
     
         27 . The implant recited in  claim 26 , wherein the fourth cavity is tapered from the third cavity to a distalmost portion of the fourth cavity. 
     
     
         28 . The implant recited in  claim 27 , wherein the fourth cavity is spaced apart from the distal end. 
     
     
         29 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the first cavity is defined by first and second inner surfaces of the head, the first inner surface extending parallel to the longitudinal axis, the second inner surface being tapered from the gap to the first inner surface. 
     
     
         30 . The implant recited in  claim 29 , wherein the head includes a plurality recesses extending into the inner surfaces. 
     
     
         31 . The implant recited in  claim 30 , wherein the recesses include a hexalobe configuration. 
     
     
         32 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the first cavity has a uniform diameter from the gap to a proximal end surface of the shaft. 
     
     
         33 . The implant recited in  claim 21 , wherein the gap is arcuate.

An implant comprising a non-cannulated shaft extending along a longitudinal axis between opposite proximal and distal ends, the proximal end including a head, the head defining a socket, the socket including a first cavity, a second cavity, a third cavity and a fourth cavity, the second cavity being disposed between the first cavity and the third cavity, the third cavity being disposed between the second cavity and the fourth cavity, the socket including a gap between the first cavity and the second cavity, the gap defining a maximum diameter of the socket. 
     
     
         35 . The implant recited in  claim 34 , wherein the fourth cavity is tapered from the third cavity to a distalmost portion of the fourth cavity. 
     
     
         36 . The implant recited in  claim 34 , wherein the fourth cavity is spaced apart from the distal end. 
     
     
         37 . The implant recited in  claim 34 , wherein the third cavity is tapered from the second cavity to the fourth cavity. 
     
     
         38 . The implant recited in  claim 34 , wherein the second cavity is tapered from the gap to the third cavity. 
     
     
         39 . The implant recited in  claim 34 , wherein:
 the first cavity is defined by first and second inner surfaces of the head, the first inner surface extending parallel to the longitudinal axis, the second inner surface being tapered from the gap to the first inner surface;   the head includes a plurality recesses extending into the inner surfaces; and   the recesses include a hexalobe configuration.

A bone fastener comprising a non-cannulated shaft extending along a longitudinal axis between opposite proximal and distal ends, the distal end being threaded, the proximal end including a head, the head defining a socket, the socket including a first cavity, a second cavity, a third cavity and a fourth cavity, the second cavity being disposed between the first cavity and the third cavity, the third cavity being disposed between the second cavity and the fourth cavity, the socket including a gap between the first cavity and the second cavity, the gap defining a maximum diameter of the socket,
 wherein the fourth cavity is tapered from the third cavity to a distalmost portion of the fourth cavity,   wherein the fourth cavity is spaced apart from the distal end,   wherein the third cavity is tapered from the second cavity to the fourth cavity, and   wherein the second cavity is tapered from the gap to the third cavity.
