Web of tipping paper

Abstract

A web of tipping paper and a smoking article manufacturing machine that cuts the web of tipping paper into individual patches and wraps each patch about a respective dual length filter rod to attach a rod of smokable material to opposite ends of each dual length filter rod before the dual length filter rod is cut to form a first and second type of smoking article having first and second filter rod segments, respectively, and in which the first filter rod segment of the first type of smoking article differs from the second filter rod segment of the second type of smoking article, the web of tipping paper including a first lateral portion, and a second lateral portion that differs from the first lateral portion, where the smoking article manufacturing machine is configured to cut the tipping paper web so that each patch is partly formed from the first lateral portion, and partly formed from the second lateral portion, the machine also being configured to wrap the patch about the dual length filter rod such that the part of the patch formed from the first lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, forms the first filter rod segment, and the part of the patch formed from the second lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, forms the second filter rod segment.

A web of tipping paper and a smoking article manufacturing machine that cuts the web of tipping paper into individual patches and wraps each patch about a respective dual length filter rod to attach a rod of smokable material to opposite ends of each dual length filter rod before the dual length filter rod is cut to form a first and second type of smoking article having first and second filter rod segments, respectively, and in which the first filter rod segment of the first type of smoking article differs from the second filter rod segment of the second type of smoking article;
 the web of tipping paper comprising:   a first lateral portion, and   a second lateral portion that differs from the first lateral portion;   wherein the smoking article manufacturing machine is configured to cut the tipping paper web so that each patch is partly formed from the first lateral portion, and partly formed from the second lateral portion,   the machine also being configured to wrap said patch about the dual length filter rod such that the part of the patch formed from the first lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, forms said first filter rod segment, and the part of the patch formed from the second lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, forms the second filter rod segment.   
     
     
         2 . The web of tipping paper and a smoking article manufacturing machine according to  claim 1 , wherein the first and second lateral portions differ from each other by way of a visual or tactile mark or other indicia. 
     
     
         3 . A method of manufacturing two different types of smoking article using a web of tipping paper that comprises:
 a first lateral portion, and   a second lateral portion that differs from the first lateral portion;   
       the method comprising cutting the web of tipping paper into individual patches and wrapping each patch about a respective dual length filter rod to attach a rod of smokable material to opposite ends of each dual length filter rod before cutting the dual length filter rod to form a first and second type of smoking article having first and second filter rod segments, respectively, and in which the first filter rod segment of the first type of smoking article differs from the second filter rod segment of the second type of smoking article;
 wherein cutting the web comprises cutting the web such that each patch is partly formed from the first lateral portion, and partly formed from the second lateral portion, and 
 wherein wrapping the patch about said dual length filter rod comprises wrapping the patch such that the part of the patch formed from the first lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod so that, when the dual length filter rod is cut, it comprises part of said first filter rod segment, and wrapping the patch such that the part of the patch formed from the second lateral portion is wrapped about a part of the dual length filter rod so that, when the dual length filter rod is cut, it comprises part of the second filter rod segment. 
 
     
     
         4 . A dual length filter rod having a rod of smokable material attached to opposite ends, and a tipping paper patch wrapped about said dual length filter rod attaching said rods of smokable material to said opposite ends such that, when the dual length filter rod is cut, first and second types of smoking article having first and second filter rod segments, respectively, will be formed, and in which the first filter rod segment of the first type of smoking article differs from the second filter rod segment of the second type of smoking article;
 the tipping paper patch being cut from a tipping paper web comprising a first lateral portion, and a second lateral portion that differs from the first lateral portion;   the patch being partly formed from the first lateral portion, and partly formed from the second lateral portion,   wherein the patch is wrapped about the dual length filter rod such that the part of the patch formed from the first lateral portion extends about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, will form said first filter rod segment, and such that the part of the patch formed from the second lateral portion extends about a part of the dual length filter rod which, when cut, will form the second filter rod segment.
