Abstract
A corrosion inhibiting composition including one or more of a plurality of carriers, each having a carrier body and an organic corrosion inhibitor, such that the carrier body encapsulates the organic corrosion inhibitor, and the carrier body is formed of a degradable material. Coatings and methods for inhibiting corrosion on a metal substrate are also described herein.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . (canceled)
2 . A coating for inhibiting corrosion on a metal substrate, the coating comprising:
a coating base comprising an organic layer; and a corrosion inhibiting composition dispersed in the coating base, the corrosion inhibiting composition comprising:
a first plurality of carriers, each comprising a first carrier body encapsulating a first encapsulated active component, the first encapsulated active components comprising a first corrosion inhibitor, the first corrosion inhibitor comprising an organic phosphonate, wherein the first carrier body is formed of a first degradable material; and
a second plurality of carriers, each comprising a second carrier body encapsulating a second encapsulated active component, the second encapsulated active components comprising a second corrosion inhibitor, the second corrosion inhibitor comprising an organic compound including a ring structure,
wherein the second carrier body is formed of a second degradable material,
wherein the first encapsulated active component is different from the second encapsulated active component, and
wherein the second plurality of carriers are free of the first corrosion inhibitor.
3 . The corrosion inhibiting composition of claim 2 , wherein the first corrosion inhibitor is different from the second corrosion inhibitor.
4 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the organic layer comprises an aliphatic hydrocarbon.
5 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the organic layer comprises a copolymer having one or more epoxy-groups, the one or more epoxy-groups having a molecular weight from about 100 to about 10,000.
6 . The coating of claim 5 , wherein the molecular weight of the one or more epoxy-groups is from about 1,000 to about 5,000.
7 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one film-forming compound.
8 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one corrosion indicator.
9 . The coating of claim 8 , wherein the at least one corrosion indicator changes its color in response to the alkaline condition resulting from corrosion.
10 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the first and second degradable materials degrade when exposed to alkaline conditions.
11 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the first and second degradable materials degrade when mechanically damaged.
12 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein said first carriers and said second carriers each form microparticles.
13 . The coating of claim 12 , wherein each microparticle comprises an average outer diameter that ranges from about 0.1 μm to about 10 μm.
14 . The coating of claim 13 , wherein each microparticle comprises an average outer diameter that ranges from about 0.5 μm to about 5 μm.
15 . The coating of claim 14 , wherein each microparticle comprises an average outer diameter that ranges from about 1 μm to about 2 μm.
16 . The coating of claim 2 having a thickness of about 10 μm to about 100 μm when applied to a metal.
17 . The coating of claim 16 , wherein the thickness is between about 25 μm to about 55 μm.
18 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein the first plurality of carriers and the second plurality of carriers comprise from about 0.1% to about 15%, by weight of the coating.
19 . The coating of claim 18 , wherein the first plurality of carriers and the second plurality of carriers comprise from about 0.5% to about 10%, by weight of the coating.
20 . The coating of claim 2 , wherein:
the first encapsulated active component consists of the first corrosion inhibitor; and the second encapsulated active component consists of the second corrosion inhibitor.
21 . A vehicle having metal body portions coated with the coating of claim 2 .Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
