Abstract

A system for hemodialysis can include a first dialysis system and a second dialysis system configured to be used in alternate fashion to provide hemodialysis for a patient, wherein the first dialysis system is configured to be worn by the patient, and wherein the second dialysis system is configured to be positioned on a support independent of the patient. The first dialysis system can be configured to be coupled to a belt worn by the patient around a waist of the patient during its operation. The second dialysis system can configured to be coupled to a stationary support during its operation.

         2 . A system for hemodialysis, comprising:
 a wearable dialysis sub-system comprising a first sorbent for removing a first toxin from blood, wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system is portable; and   a stationary dialysis sub-system detachably connectable to the wearable dialysis system, the stationary dialysis sub-system comprises a second sorbent for removing a second toxin from the blood, wherein the stationary dialysis sub-system is configured to be operable when coupled to the wearable dialysis system, and   wherein the wearable dialysis system is configured to be used by a patient detached from or in combination with the stationary dialysis system.   
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system is configured to be operable independent of the stationary dialysis sub-system. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system comprises:
 a dialyzer;   a blood circuit, configured to receive blood from a patient and circulate the blood through the dialyzer to remove toxins from the blood; and   a portable dialysate circuit, configured to circulate dialysate through the dialyzer to receive the toxins removed from the blood.   
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 4 , wherein the portable dialysis sub-system further comprises a pump operably coupled to the blood circuit and the dialysate circuit to drive the blood and the dialysate through the sub-system. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 5 , wherein the first sorbent comprises at least one of zirconium phosphate; hydrous zirconium oxide; metals containing zirconium; alloys containing zirconium; an organic compound containing zirconium; an inorganic compound containing zirconium, minerals containing zirconium; or combinations thereof. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system is configured to be worn by the patient during operation such that the patient is untethered. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system further comprises a belt configured to support the wearable dialysis sub-system and configured to be worn by the patient. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system further comprises a backpack. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system further comprises a portable power source. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis system is untethered. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system weighs less than or equal to 10 pounds. 
     
     
         13 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the second sorbent comprises urease. 
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the stationary dialysis sub-system is tethered. 
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the wearable dialysis sub-system is configured to be worn by a patient during a period of mobility. 
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 2 , wherein the stationary dialysis sub-system is configured to be worn by a patient during a stationary period. 
     
     
         17 . A method of dialyzing blood, comprising:
 removing a first set of toxins from blood during a mobile period using a wearable dialysis sub-system, wherein during the mobile period, the patient can move unconstrained;   connecting the wearable dialysis sub-system to a stationary dialysis sub-system to produce a combined dialysis system; and   removing a second set toxins from blood during a stationary period using the combined dialysis system, wherein during the stationary period, the patient is relatively stationary.   
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 17 , wherein removing the second set of toxins includes the first set of toxins and urea. 
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 17 , wherein the mobile period is during daytime. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 17 , wherein the stationary period is during nighttime.
