Abstract
According to the disclosure, there is provided a novel lettuce cultivar, designated Lucky. Lucky is described as a lettuce cultivar with dark green thick leaves, large head size, strong tolerance to tip burn, short core length and round heads. This disclosure thus relates to the seeds of lettuce cultivar Lucky, to the plants of lettuce cultivar Lucky, to plant parts of lettuce cultivar Lucky, to methods for producing a lettuce cultivar by crossing the lettuce cultivar Lucky with another lettuce cultivar, and to methods for producing a lettuce cultivar containing in its genetic material one or more backcross conversion traits or transgenes and to the backcross conversion lettuce plants and plant parts produced by those methods.

1 . A seed of lettuce designated Lucky, wherein a representative sample of seed of said lettuce having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-______.
2 . A lettuce plant, or a part thereof or a plant cell thereof, produced by growing the seed of claim 1 .
3 . The lettuce part of claim 2 , wherein the lettuce part is selected from the group consisting of: a leaf, a flower, a head, an ovule, pollen and a cell.
4 . A lettuce plant having all of the characteristics of lettuce Lucky listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental conditions, or a part or a plant cell thereof.
5 . A tissue or culture of regenerable cells produced from the plant or plant part of claim 2 , wherein cells of the tissue culture are produced from a plant part selected from the group consisting of protoplasts, embryos, meristematic cells, callus, pollen, ovules, flowers, seeds, leaves, roots, root tips, anthers, stems, petioles, cotyledons and hypocotyls.
6 . A lettuce plant regenerated from the tissue culture of claim 5 , said plant having the characteristics of lettuce Lucky, wherein a representative sample of seed of said lettuce having been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-______.
7 . A lettuce head produced from the plant of claim 2 .
8 . A method for producing a lettuce head comprising a) growing the lettuce plant of claim 2 to produce a lettuce head, and b) harvesting said lettuce head.
9 . A lettuce head produced by the method of claim 8 .
10 . A method for producing a lettuce seed comprising crossing a first parent lettuce plant with a second parent lettuce plant and harvesting the resultant F 1 lettuce seed, wherein said first parent lettuce plant and/or second parent lettuce plant is the lettuce plant of claim 2 .
11 . An F 1 lettuce seed produced by the method of claim 10 .
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises: (a) crossing a plant grown from said F 1 lettuce seed with itself or a different lettuce plant to produce a seed of a progeny plant of a subsequent generation; (b) growing a progeny plant of a subsequent generation from said seed of a progeny plant of a subsequent generation and crossing the progeny plant of a subsequent generation with itself or a second plant to produce a progeny plant of a further subsequent generation; and (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) using said progeny plant of a further subsequent generation from step (b) in place of the plant grown from said F 1 lettuce seed in step (a), wherein steps (a) and (b) are repeated with sufficient inbreeding to produce an inbred lettuce plant derived from the lettuce Lucky.
13 . A method for producing a lettuce seed comprising self-pollinating the lettuce plant of claim 2 and harvesting the resultant lettuce seed.
14 . An F 1 lettuce seed produced by the method of claim 13 .
15 . A method of producing a lettuce plant derived from the lettuce Lucky, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) crossing the plant of claim 2 with a second lettuce plant to produce a progeny plant; (b) crossing the progeny plant of step (a) with itself or the second lettuce plant in step (a) to produce a seed; (c) growing a progeny plant of a subsequent generation from the seed produced in step (b); (d) crossing the progeny plant of a subsequent generation of step (c) with itself or the second lettuce plant in step (a) to produce a lettuce plant derived from the lettuce Lucky.
16 . The method of claim 15 further comprising the step of: (e) repeating step b) and/or c) for at least 1 more generation to produce a lettuce plant derived from the lettuce Lucky.
17 . The plant or plant part of claim 2 , wherein the plant further comprises at least one locus conversion.
18 . The plant of claim 17 , wherein the locus conversion confers said plant with a trait selected from the group consisting of male sterility, male fertility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance, water stress tolerance, heat tolerance, improved shelf life, delayed shelf life, and improved nutritional quality.
19 . The plant of claim 18 , wherein the locus conversion is an artificially mutated gene or nucleotide sequence.
20 . A method of introducing a desired trait into lettuce Lucky comprising:
(a) crossing a lettuce Lucky plant grown from lettuce Lucky seed, wherein a representative sample of seed has been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-______, with another lettuce plant that comprises a desired trait to produce F 1 progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of insect resistance, herbicide resistance, disease resistance, water stress tolerance, heat tolerance, improved shelf life, delayed shelf life, and improved nutritional quality; (b) selecting one or more progeny plants that have the desired trait to produce selected progeny plants; (c) crossing the selected progeny plants with the lettuce Lucky plants to produce backcross progeny plants; (d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce Lucky listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental conditions to produce selected backcross progeny plants; and (e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce Lucky listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental conditions.
21 . A method for developing a lettuce plant in a lettuce plant breeding program, comprising applying plant breeding techniques comprising recurrent selection, backcrossing, pedigree breeding, marker enhanced selection, or transformation to the lettuce plant of claim 2 , or its parts, wherein application of said techniques results in development of a lettuce plant.
22 . A method of vegetatively propagating a plant of lettuce cultivar Lucky, wherein the method comprises: (a) collecting a plant part capable of being propagated from a plant of lettuce cultivar Lucky, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-______; and (b) producing at least a first rooted plantlet or plant from said plant part.
23 . A lettuce plantlet or plant produced by the method of claim 17 , wherein the lettuce plantlet or plant has all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce cultivar Lucky.
24 . A method of producing a genetically modified lettuce plant, wherein the method comprises mutation, transformation, gene conversion, genome editing, RNA interference or gene silencing of the plant of claim 1 .
25 . A genetically modified lettuce plant produced by the method of claim 24 .
26 . A method of determining a genotype of lettuce cultivar Lucky, or a first-generation progeny thereof, the method comprising: (a) obtaining a sample of nucleic acids from the plant of claim 1 ; and (b) detecting a polymorphism in the nucleic acid sample.
27 . A method of producing a commodity plant product, comprising obtaining the plant of claim 1 , or a plant part thereof, and producing the commodity plant product from said plant or plant part thereof, wherein said commodity plant product is selected from the group consisting of fresh lettuce leaf, fresh lettuce head, cut, sliced, ground, pureed, dried, canned, jarred, washed, packaged, frozen and heated leaves.
