Abstract

A volume filling device for treatment of obesity is placed outside the stomach wall of the patient to reduce the inner volume of the stomach, thereby affecting the patient's appetite. By providing the volume filling device outside the stomach wall, contact with stomach acids is avoided, thereby increasing the life of the device.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 157 . (canceled)

158 . An apparatus for treating obesity of an obese patient, the apparatus comprising:
a first volume filling device, and a second volume filling device, wherein the first volume filling device comprises a first interconnecting portion and the second volume filling device comprises a second interconnecting portion, the first interconnecting portion and the second interconnecting portion being configured to be connected with each other to form a combined volume filling device adapted to be at least substantially invaginated by a stomach wall portion of the patient, wherein the combined volume filling device comprises biocompatible material and wherein the combined volume filling device is adapted to be placed on the outside of the stomach wall so as to reduce the volume of the food cavity by a volume substantially exceeding the volume of said combined volume filling device.

159 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device is adapted to be inserted into a pouch formed by a part of the stomach wall.

160 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein an outer surface of at least one of the first volume filling device and the second volume filling device comprises a friction reducing material.

161 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first volume filling device and second volume filling device are adapted to be interconnected after said first volume filling device and second volume filling device after said first volume filling device and said second volume filling device have been inserted into the patient.

162 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device is configured to be expandable so as to assume an expanded state after being implanted.

163 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device comprises a circumference, as seen in a plane perpendicular to an axis through the device, that increases and decreases at least two times along said axis.

164 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device comprises a plurality of outer layers.

165 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device comprises an inflatable chamber, and wherein the apparatus further comprises a tube for supplying fluid to the inflatable chamber.

166 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device has a maximum circumference of at least 30 millimeters.

167 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a stretching device configured to be implanted in the patient and operable to stretch a portion of the patient's stomach wall such that satiety is created.

168 . The apparatus according to claim 167 , wherein the apparatus is configured to be non-invasively adjustable postoperatively and further comprises a control unit for controlling at least one of the combined volume filling device and the stretching device, the control unit being
an external control unit comprising a wireless remote control and/or a switch configured to be subcutaneously placed in the patient, and an internal control unit adapted to be implanted in the patient and programmable from outside the patient's body, wherein the internal control unit is programmed to regulate the apparatus according to a pre-programmed time-schedule or according to input from a sensor sensing a physical parameter of the patient or a functional parameter of the apparatus.

169 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein further comprising at least one of:
a stretching device adapted to be engaged with a part of the stomach wall, and to stretch the stomach wall, and a stretching device comprising two parts adapted to be engaged with different parts of the stomach wall, wherein the stretching device is further adapted to stretch the different wall portions independently from each other.

170 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first volume filling device and the second volume filling device comprises a least one of:
a size that admits free passage through the gastrointestinal system, a capability to deform to a shape allowing them to be inserted into a laparoscopic trocar, and a capability to be placed outside the stomach wall via a gastroscopic instrument.

171 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an internal energy receiver adapted to be located inside the patient and to receive wireless energy, transmitted from an external energy source located outside the patient, for supplying the implanted apparatus with energy.

172 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the combined volume filling device is destructible by acid.
