Abstract

A system including a wired or wireless automation device of an automation system that detects threats within a secured geographic area, a processor of the automation device that measures performance parameters of the automation device and reports the measured performance parameters to a control panel of the automation system and a processor of the control panel that compares the measured performance parameters of the automation device with one or more criteria, detects a potential failure of the automation device and presents recommendations for ameliorating the potential failure to an authorized human user of the automation system.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A system comprising:
 a plurality of building automation devices;   a controller operatively coupled to the plurality of building automation devices, wherein the controller is configured to:
 receive usage data from the plurality of building automation devices over time; 
 determine a measure of usage of each of the plurality of building automation devices over time; 
 issue a maintenance event for a particular one of the plurality of building automation devices based at least in part on the determined measure of usage of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices; 
 identify a reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices from a plurality of reasons; 
 provide an alert of the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices; and 
 provide a recommendation for a particular maintenance action to be taken in response to the maintenance event, wherein the particular maintenance action is selected from a plurality of actions based at least in part on the identified reason for the maintenance event. 
   
     
     
         2 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the alert and the recommendation are provided to an authorized user of the system. 
     
     
         3 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on a number of recorded events of the corresponding building automation device. 
     
     
         4 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on one or more measured performance parameters associated with the corresponding building automation device. 
     
     
         5 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices comprises a detected opportunity to extend service of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices by swapping the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices with another one of the plurality of building automation devices with a lower measure of usage. 
     
     
         6 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices comprises a detected opportunity to extend service of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices by performing a suggest maintenance action on the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices based on the measure of usage of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices. 
     
     
         7 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices comprises a detected opportunity to replace the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices under a warranty of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices. 
     
     
         8 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices comprises a detected sudden increase in the measure of usage and/or a sudden decrease in the measure of usage of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices. 
     
     
         9 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices comprises a detection of an increase in nuisance events from the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices. 
     
     
         10 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of building automation devices comprises Heating Ventilation and/or Air Conditioning (HVAC) devices. 
     
     
         11 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of building automation devices comprises security devices. 
     
     
         12 . The system of  claim 1 , wherein the particular maintenance action comprises replacing the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices with a higher grade version of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices. 
     
     
         13 . A method comprising:
 receiving usage data from a plurality of building automation devices over time;   determining a measure of usage of each of the plurality of building automation devices over time;   issuing a maintenance event for a particular one of the plurality of building automation devices based at least in part on the determined measure of usage of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices;   identifying a reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices from a plurality of reasons;   providing an alert of the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices; and   providing a recommendation for a particular maintenance action to be taken in response to the maintenance event, wherein the particular maintenance action is selected from a plurality of actions based at least in part on the identified reason for the maintenance event.   
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13 , further comprising performing the particular maintenance action. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the recommendation is provided as part of the alert. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on a number of recorded events of the corresponding building automation device. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on one or more measured performance parameters associated with the corresponding building automation device. 
     
     
         18 . A non-transient computer readable medium storing instructions thereon that when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:
 receive usage data from a plurality of building automation devices over time;   determine a measure of usage of each of the plurality of building automation devices over time;   issue a maintenance event for a particular one of the plurality of building automation devices based at least in part on the determined measure of usage of the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices;   identify a reason for issuing the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices from a plurality of reasons;   provide an alert of the maintenance event for the particular one of the plurality of building automation devices; and   provide a recommendation for a particular maintenance action to be taken in response to the maintenance event, wherein the particular maintenance action is selected from a plurality of actions based at least in part on the identified reason for the maintenance event.   
     
     
         19 . The non-transient computer readable medium storing instructions of  claim 18 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on a number of recorded events of the corresponding building automation device. 
     
     
         20 . The non-transient computer readable medium storing instructions of  claim 18 , wherein the measure of usage is based at least in part on one or more measured performance parameters associated with the corresponding building automation device.
