Abstract

Electronic device cases and lighting and power devices and modules are described. A case for a portable electronic device may include a rim portion defining an opening for a display of the portable electronic device and one or more light sources adjacent to the rim portion. A lighting device may include one or more light sources for illuminating a user's face during use of a camera of a portable electronic device, and a power member for providing power to the one or more light sources. A lighting module may include a plurality of lighting devices. A power module having a battery may be configured to provide power to a portable electronic device.

         42 . A lighting device for attachment to a laptop computer, the lighting device comprising:
 a case having one or more light sources and a mounting member configured to detachably secure the case to a rim of the laptop computer such that the one or more light sources are oriented to illuminate a region in front of a display screen of the laptop computer; and   an electrical connector configured to receive power from a port of the laptop computer.   
     
     
         43 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the electrical connector is configured to mate to a headphone socket of the laptop computer. 
     
     
         44 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the electrical connector is configured to mate to a serial bus port of the laptop computer. 
     
     
         45 . The lighting device of  claim 44 , wherein the serial bus port is a Universal Serial Bus port or a FireWire port. 
     
     
         46 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the case has a plurality of light sources. 
     
     
         47 . The lighting device of  claim 46 , wherein the plurality of light sources include at least three light sources arranged in a line. 
     
     
         48 . The lighting device of  claim 47 , wherein the plurality of light sources are uniformly spaced along the line. 
     
     
         49 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the light sources have a controllable color. 
     
     
         50 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , further comprising an interface to receive a signal from a communications link external to the lighting device to control the color of the light sources. 
     
     
         51 . The lighting device of  claim 50 , wherein the communication link comprises a wireless communication link with the laptop computer. 
     
     
         52 . The lighting device of  claim 50 , wherein the communication link comprises the electrical connector. 
     
     
         53 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the light sources are light emitting diodes (LEDs). 
     
     
         54 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the case is formed from a polymeric material. 
     
     
         55 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the mounting member includes a fastener to fasten the case to rim of the laptop computer. 
     
     
         56 . The lighting device of  claim 42 , wherein the mounting member include a magnetic material. 
     
     
         57 . A lighting device for attachment to portable computing device, the lighting device comprising:
 a case having one or more light sources and a mounting member configured to detachably secure the case along a single rim of the portable computing device such that the one or more light sources are oriented to illuminate a region in front of a display screen of the portable computing device; and   an electrical connector configured to receive power from a port of the portable computing device.   
     
     
         58 . A system for image or video capture, comprising:
 a portable computing device having a display screen and a camera positioned to capture an image or video of a region in front of the display, wherein the portable computing device is configured to display a graphical user interface on the display screen; and   a lighting device including a case having one or more light sources that have a controllable color, a mounting member configured to detachably secure the case to a rim of the portable computing device such that the one or more light sources are oriented to illuminate the region in front of the display screen of the portable computing device, and an interface to receive a signal from the portable computing device on a communications link such that the graphical user interface controls the color of the light sources.   
     
     
         59 . The system of  claim 58 , comprising an electrical connector to deliver power from a port of the portable computing device to the lighting device. 
     
     
         60 . The system of  claim 59 , wherein the communication link comprises a wireless communication link with the portable computing device. 
     
     
         61 . The system of  claim 59 , wherein the communication link comprises the electrical connector. 
     
     
         62 . The system of  claim 59 , wherein the graphical user interface is configured to provide a control for color balance of light from the light sources. 
     
     
         63 . A system for image or video capture, comprising:
 a portable computing device having a display screen, a camera positioned to capture an image or video of a region in front of the display;   a sensor to detect lighting conditions; and   a lighting device including a case having one or more light sources that have a controllable color, and a mounting member configured to detachably secure the case to a rim of the portable computing device such that the one or more light sources are oriented to illuminate the region in front of the display screen of the portable computing device, wherein the lighting device is configured to vary output of the one or more light sources based on the lighting conditions detected by the sensor.   
     
     
         64 . The system of  claim 63 , wherein the sensor is a light sensor of the portable computing device.
