Abstract
A determination is made that a request associated with an application is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral. An insertion of a record representing at least the request at a blockchain is initiated. One or more records representing the request are accessed to perform an operation indicated in the request.

21 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving a request for a first transaction directed to an item of a first category of items; analyzing a history of earlier transactions directed to other items of the first category; and determining, based at least in part on said analyzing, that at least a portion of processing of the first transaction is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral.
22 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:
causing, after said determining, a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction to be inserted into a blockchain; and causing an indication that the portion of processing has succeeded to be provided to a submitter of the request prior to completion of implementation of the portion of processing.
23 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:
selecting, from among a plurality of blockchain services, a particular blockchain service at which a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction is to be stored, wherein said selecting is based at least in part on an estimate of a time required to store the first record at the particular blockchain service.
24 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 23 , wherein the particular blockchain service comprises resources of a cloud computing environment.
25 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 21 , wherein said determining that at least the portion of processing of the first transaction is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral is based at least in part on a score generated by one or more of: (a) a machine learning model or (b) a rule processing system.
26 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:
receiving a request for a second transaction directed to a different item; and determining, based at least in part on a price of the different item, that at least a portion of processing of the second transaction is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral.
27 . The computer-implemented method as recited in claim 21 , further comprising:
receiving a request for a second transaction directed to a different item; and determining, based at least in part on a shipping property associated with the different item, that at least a portion of processing of the second transaction is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral.
28 . A system, comprising:
one or more computing devices; wherein the one or more computing devices include instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices cause the one or more computing devices to:
obtain a request for a first transaction directed to an item of a first category of items;
examine a history of earlier transactions directed to other items of the first category; and
determine, based at least in part on examination of the history of earlier transactions, that at least a portion of processing of the first transaction is a candidate for blockchain-based deferral.
29 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
cause a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction to be inserted into a blockchain; and cause an indication that the portion of processing has succeeded to be provided to a submitter of the request prior to completion of implementation of the portion of processing.
30 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
provide an indication, to a submitter of the request, that the portion of processing has been deferred.
31 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
select, from among a plurality of resource groups, a particular resource group at which a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction is to be stored in a blockchain, wherein selection of the particular resource group is based at least in part on an estimate of a cost associated with storing the first record at the particular resource group.
32 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
obtain a score pertaining to the first transaction from one or more of: (a) a machine learning model or (b) a rule processing system, wherein the portion of processing of the first transaction is a determined as a candidate for blockchain-based deferral based at least in part on the score.
33 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
obtain one or more performance metrics of a transaction processing resource at which other requests directed to items of the first category have been processed, wherein the portion of processing of the first transaction is a determined as a candidate for blockchain-based deferral based at least in part on the one or more performance metrics.
34 . The system as recited in claim 28 , wherein the one or more computing devices include further instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices further cause the one or more computing devices to:
cause (a) a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction to be inserted into a blockchain and (b) a second record representing the portion of processing to be inserted into a data store which does not comprise a blockchain; and access the second record to perform the portion of processing of the first transaction.
35 . One or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media storing program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:
determine that a request for a first transaction directed to an item of a first category of items has been submitted; access a history of earlier transactions directed to other items of the first category; and select, based at least in part on the history of earlier transactions, at least a portion of processing of the first transaction as a candidate for blockchain-based deferral.
36 . The one or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media as recited in claim 35 , storing further program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors further cause the one or more processors to:
cause a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction to be inserted into a blockchain; and cause an indication that the portion of processing has succeeded to be provided to a submitter of the request prior to completion of implementation of the portion of processing.
37 . The one or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media as recited in claim 35 , storing further program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors further cause the one or more processors to:
provide an indication, to a submitter of the request, of a blockchain record corresponding to the portion of processing of the first transaction.
38 . The one or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media as recited in claim 35 , storing further program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors further cause the one or more processors to:
select, from among a plurality of resource groups, a particular resource group at which a first record representing the portion of processing of the first transaction is to be stored in a blockchain.
39 . The one or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media as recited in claim 35 , storing further program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors further cause the one or more processors to:
obtain an indicator of availability of a transaction processing resource, wherein the portion of processing of the first transaction is selected as a candidate for blockchain-based deferral based at least in part on the indicator of availability.
40 . The one or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media as recited in claim 35 , storing further program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors further cause the one or more processors to:
