Event-driven authentication of physical objects
Abstract
A system may include an event trigger processor (ETP) configured to receive signals from sensors or another system (FIG. 11 ). Output signals from the sensor(s), local or remotely located, may be utilized by the ETP as trigger inputs to initiate a process or response, namely authentication actions, which also may be local or remote from the ETP. Events from external systems also may serve as trigger inputs to the ETP. In some embodiments, as a triggered response, the ETP may direct a local field imaging system to acquire an image of an object, generate a digital fingerprint from the image, and query a database using the generated digital fingerprint to identify or authenticate the object. The ETP may initiate or direct various actions by sending a message to another entity or system, for example, using known network communication protocols.

25 . A system, comprising:
a digital fingerprinting system operable to perform authentication actions with respect to one or more physical objects using respective ones of a plurality of digital fingerprints, each digital fingerprint based on digital image data of at least a portion of a corresponding physical object, and wherein each digital fingerprint is based solely on native features of the corresponding physical object and not based on any identifier, label, or other proxy added to the physical object for identification or authentication and the digital fingerprint contains a set of fingerprint features which are extracted from one or more authentication regions in the digital image data; and an event trigger processor communicatively coupled to the digital fingerprinting system, the event trigger processor operable to:
receive information representative of events or conditions at one or more remote locations in which one or more physical objects are handled;
select an authentication action to be performed based on the received information representative of events or conditions; and
trigger the digital fingerprinting system to perform the selected authentication action with respect to at least one of the one or more physical objects.
26 . The system of claim 25 , further comprising:
an image system positioned to capture images at one of the remote locations, the image system operable to capture images in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
27 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is communicatively coupled to one or more sensors at the one or more remote locations to receive information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors at the one or more remote locations.
28 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is responsive to a conveyor event or condition indicative of an operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations.
29 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is responsive to a conveyor jam or stopped event or condition indicative of a jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations.
30 . The system of claim 29 , wherein, in response to a conveyor event or condition indicative of the jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations, the event trigger processor triggers the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate each of a plurality of items on the conveyor which has the jammed or stopped operational status.
31 . The system of claim 29 , wherein, in response to a conveyor event or condition indicative of a jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations the event trigger processor triggers the digital fingerprinting system start to authenticate each of a plurality of bags on the conveyor which has the jammed or stopped operational status before the conveyor is restarted.
32 . The system of claim 25 , further comprising:
an image system positioned to capture images of luggage items on one of the conveyors, the image system operable to capture images in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
33 . The system of claim 25 , further comprising:
an image system positioned to capture images of items being manufactured on one of the conveyors, the image system operable to capture images in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
34 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is communicatively coupled to one or more conveyor sensors at the one or more remote locations to receive information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more conveyor sensors at the one or more remote locations.
35 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is responsive to an arrival of one of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations.
36 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, in response to the arrival of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations, the event trigger processor triggers the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate the one of the one or more physical objects.
37 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, in response to the arrival of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations, the event trigger processor triggers an imager to capture one or more images of the one or more physical objects, and triggers the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate the one or more physical objects.
38 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, in response to the arrival of a machined part at one of the remote locations, the event trigger processor triggers the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate the machined part.
39 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, in response to the arrival of a machined part at one of the remote locations, the event trigger processor triggers an authentication process including a capture a digital fingerprint of the machined part, and a comparison of the captured digital fingerprint of the machined part with at least one reference digital fingerprint for the machined part.
40 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, the authentication process further includes authentication of at least one of a serial number of the machined part and a manufacturer the machined part.
41 . The system of claim 35 , wherein, the authentication process further includes concluding whether the machined part is authenticate.
42 . A method, comprising:
receiving, by an event trigger processor, information representative of events or conditions at one or more remote locations in which one or more physical objects are handled; selecting, by the event trigger processor, an authentication action to be performed based on the received information representative of events or conditions; and triggering, by an event trigger processor, a digital fingerprinting system to perform the selected authentication action with respect to at least one of the one or more physical objects, wherein the digital fingerprinting system operable to perform authentication actions with respect to one or more physical objects using respective ones of a plurality of digital fingerprints, each digital fingerprint based on digital image data of at least a portion of a corresponding physical object, and wherein each digital fingerprint is based solely on native features of the corresponding physical object and not based on any identifier, label, or other proxy added to the physical object for identification or authentication and the digital fingerprint contains a set of fingerprint features which are extracted from one or more authentication regions in the digital image data.
43 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
capturing, by an image system, images at one of the remote locations in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
44 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
receiving, by the event trigger processor, information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors at the one or more remote locations.
45 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
responding, by the event trigger processor, to a conveyor event or condition indicative of an operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations.
46 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
responding, by the event trigger processor, to a conveyor jam or stopped event or condition indicative of a jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations.
47 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:
in response to a conveyor event or condition indicative of a jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations, triggering the digital fingerprinting system, by the event trigger processor, to authenticate each of a plurality of items on the conveyor which has the jammed or stopped operational status.
48 . The method of claim 46 , further comprising:
in response to a conveyor event or condition indicative of a jammed or stopped operational status of at least one conveyor located at one of the one or more remote locations, triggering the digital fingerprinting system, by the event trigger processor, to start to authenticate each of a plurality of bags on the conveyor which has the jammed or stopped operational status before the conveyor is restarted.
49 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
capturing, by an image system, images of luggage items on one of the conveyors in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
50 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
capturing, by an image system, images of items of manufacture which are on one of the conveyors in response to signals from the event trigger processor.
51 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
receiving, by the event trigger processor, information representative of events or conditions as sensed by one or more conveyor sensors at the one or more remote locations.
52 . The method of claim 42 , further comprising:
responding, by the event trigger processor, to an arrival of one of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations.
53 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
in response to the arrival of one of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations, triggering the digital fingerprinting system, by the event trigger processor, to authenticate the one of the one or more physical objects.
54 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
in response to the arrival of one of the one or more physical objects at one of the remote locations, triggering, by the event trigger processor, an imager to capture one or more images of the one of the one or more physical objects, and triggering, by the event trigger processor, the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate the one of the one or more physical objects.
55 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
in response to the arrival of a machined part at one of the remote locations, triggering, by the event trigger processor, the digital fingerprinting system to authenticate the machined part.
56 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
in response to the arrival of a machined part at one of the remote locations, triggering, by the event trigger processor, an authentication process including capturing of a digital fingerprint of the machined part, and comparing the captured digital fingerprint of the machined part with at least one reference digital fingerprint for the machined part.
57 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
authenticating of at least one of a serial number of the machined part and a manufacturer the machined part.
58 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:
