Abstract

A system may include an event trigger processor (ETP) configured to receive signals from sensors or another system (FIG. 11 ). Output signals from the sensor(s), local or remotely located, may be utilized by the ETP as trigger inputs to initiate a process or response, namely authentication actions, which also may be local or remote from the ETP. Events from external systems also may serve as trigger inputs to the ETP. In some embodiments, as a triggered response, the ETP may direct a local field imaging system to acquire an image of an object, generate a digital fingerprint from the image, and query a database using the generated digital fingerprint to identify or authenticate the object. The ETP may initiate or direct various actions by sending a message to another entity or system, for example, using known network communication protocols.

         25 . A system, comprising:
 an event trigger processor, the event trigger processor communicatively coupled to one or more sensors which are located at a remote location that is located remotely from the event trigger processor, the event trigger processor operable to:
 receive information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors; 
 select an authentication action to be performed based on the received information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors; and 
 cause at least one robot located at the remote location to capture at least one image of at least one object for use in authentication. 
   
     
     
         26 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor causes the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object via a remote field image acquisition system located at the remote location. 
     
     
         27 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor causes the at least one robot located at the remote location to move in order to capture the at least one image of the at least one object. 
     
     
         28 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor causes the at least one robot located at the remote location to capture the at least one image of an object that is to be authenticated via a digital fingerprint of the object. 
     
     
         29 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is responsive to at least one of: a door ajar event or condition, or break-in sensed event or condition. 
     
     
         30 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is responsive to at least one of: an expected but missing presence of a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder, or an expected but missing presence of documentation. 
     
     
         31 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is operable to process the received information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors. 
     
     
         32 . The system of  claim 31 , wherein the event trigger processor is operable to determine whether a trigger event or condition has occurred. 
     
     
         33 . The system of  claim 32 , wherein the event trigger processor is operable to determine whether the trigger event or condition has occurred where the trigger event or condition is caused by an object that is physically separate from a plurality of physical objects at the remote location. 
     
     
         34 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is further operable to cause transmission of a message to a digital fingerprinting system to direct the selected authentication action to be performed by the digital fingerprinting system with respect to at least one of a plurality of physical objects which are located at the remote location. 
     
     
         35 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the event trigger processor is further operable to cause transmission of a message to a digital fingerprinting system to direct the selected authentication action to be performed by the digital fingerprinting system with respect to each of a plurality of physical objects which are located at the remote location. 
     
     
         36 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 a digital fingerprinting system operable to generate digital fingerprints of each of a plurality of physical objects, each digital fingerprint based on digital image data of at least a portion of a corresponding physical object, and wherein each digital fingerprint is based solely on native features of the corresponding physical object and not based on any identifier, label, or other proxy added to the physical object for identification or authentication and the digital fingerprint contains a set of fingerprint features which are extracted from one or more authentication regions in the digital image data.   
     
     
         37 . The system of  claim 36 , wherein the digital fingerprinting system is communicatively coupled to receive images from a local field imaging system which is located at the remote location. 
     
     
         38 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 a digital fingerprinting system operable to compare a digital fingerprint generated from the captured at least one image of at least one object with at least one reference digital fingerprint.   
     
     
         39 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 a local field imaging system which is located at the remote location.   
     
     
         40 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 a remote field image acquisition system located at the remote location.   
     
     
         41 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 at least a first robot of the at least one robot located at the remote location.   
     
     
         42 . The system of  claim 25 , further comprising:
 at least a first sensor of the one or more sensors.   
     
     
         43 . The system of  claim 42 , wherein at least the first sensor of the one or more sensors is operable to transmit a trigger message based on detection of a trigger event or condition. 
     
     
         44 . A method, comprising:
 receiving, by an event trigger processor, information representative of events or conditions as sensed by one or more sensors, the one or more sensors which are located at a remote location that is located remotely from the event trigger processor;   selecting, by event trigger processor, an authentication action to be performed based on the received information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors; and   causing, by event trigger processor, at least one robot located at the remote location to capture at least one image of at least one object for use in authentication.   
     
     
         45 . The method of  claim 44 , wherein causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object includes causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object via a remote field image acquisition system located at the remote location. 
     
     
         46 . The method of  claim 44 , wherein causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object includes causing the at least one robot to move in order to capture the at least one image of the at least one object. 
     
     
         47 . The method of  claim 44 , wherein causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object includes causing the at least one robot located at the remote location to capture the at least one image of an object that is to be authenticated via a digital fingerprint of the at least one object. 
     
     
         48 . The method of  claim 44 , wherein causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object is responsive to a representation of at least one of: a door ajar event or condition, or break-in sensed event or condition, in the received information. 
     
     
         49 . The method of  claim 44 , causing the at least one robot to capture the at least one image of the at least one object is responsive to a representation of at least one of: an expected but missing presence of a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder, or an expected but missing presence of documentation, in the received information. 
     
     
         50 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 processing, by the event trigger processor, the received information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors.   
     
     
         51 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein processing the received information representative of events or conditions as sensed by the one or more sensors includes determining whether a trigger event or condition has occurred. 
     
     
         52 . The method of  claim 51 , wherein determining whether a trigger event or condition has occurred includes determining whether the trigger event or condition has occurred where the trigger event or condition is caused by an object that is physically separate from a plurality of physical objects at the remote location. 
     
     
         53 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 transmitting, by the event trigger processor, a message to a digital fingerprinting system to direct the selected authentication action to be performed by the digital fingerprinting system with respect to one of a plurality of physical objects which are located at the remote location.   
     
     
         54 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 transmitting, by the event trigger processor, a message to a digital fingerprinting system to direct the selected authentication action to be performed by the digital fingerprinting system with respect to each of a plurality of physical objects which are located at the remote location.   
     
     
         55 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 generating, by a digital fingerprinting system, one or more digital fingerprints of each of one or more physical objects, each digital fingerprint based on digital image data of at least a portion of a corresponding physical object, and wherein each digital fingerprint is based solely on native features of the corresponding physical object and not based on any identifier, label, or other proxy added to the physical object for identification or authentication and the digital fingerprint contains a set of fingerprint features which are extracted from one or more authentication regions in the digital image data.   
     
     
         56 . The method of  claim 55 , further comprising:
 receiving, by the digital fingerprinting system, image data from a local field imaging system which is located at the remote location.   
     
     
         57 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 comparing, by a digital fingerprinting system, a digital fingerprint generated from the captured at least one image of at least one object with at least one reference digital fingerprint.   
     
     
         58 . The method of  claim 44 , further comprising:
 receiving, by the event trigger processor, image data from a remote field image acquisition system located at the remote location.
