Abstract

A mechanical insecticide including: a biodegradable substrate; and a layer of mineral particles partially embedded in a surface of the biodegradable substrate.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A mechanical insecticide comprising:
 a garden covering comprising:
 a biodegradable substrate; and 
 a layer of diatomaceous earth partially embedded in a surface of the biodegradable substrate. 
   
     
     
         2 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 1 , wherein particles of the layer of diatomaceous earth have a mean average diameter of no more than 20 microns. 
     
     
         3 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 1 , wherein the garden covering is selected from the group consisting of bark, wood chips, straw, plant fiber, leaves, compost, fabric, landscape fabric, mulch, wood pellets, and weed barrier. 
     
     
         4 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 1 , wherein the garden covering is selected from the group consisting of bark, wood chips, landscape fabric, and weed barrier. 
     
     
         5 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 1 , wherein the layer of diatomaceous earth is a layer of milled diatomaceous earth. 
     
     
         6 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 1 , wherein the garden covering comprises two layers of diatomaceous earth partially embedded in opposite sides of the biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         7 . A mechanical insecticide comprising:
 a garden covering comprising:
 a biodegradable substrate; 
 an adhesive on a surface of the biodegradable substrate, wherein the adhesive is a starch-based adhesive; and 
 a layer of diatomaceous earth partially embedded in the adhesive. 
   
     
     
         8 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , wherein the adhesive and diatomaceous earth are patterned on the surface of the biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         9 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , wherein the adhesive degrades under biodegradation into a fertilizer. 
     
     
         10 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , wherein the layer of diatomaceous earth comprises particles of less than 10 microns in diameter. 
     
     
         11 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , wherein the garden covering is selected from a group consisting of: bark, wood chips, landscape fabric, and weed barrier. 
     
     
         12 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , wherein the starch-based adhesive is applied in a pattern on the garden covering. 
     
     
         13 . The mechanical insecticide of  claim 7 , further comprising a second layer of starch-based adhesive and a second layer of diatomaceous earth on a second side of the biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         14 . A method of manufacturing a mechanical insecticide comprising:
 soaking a biodegradable substrate comprising bark in a liquid bath to soften the substrate;   embedding a layer of diatomaceous earth into the softened biodegradable substrate; and   drying the biodegradable substrate.   
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 14 , further comprising milling the particles of the layer of diatomaceous earth prior to embedding the layer of diatomaceous earth in the softened biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the liquid bath is a water bath. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 14 , further comprising milling the layer of diatomaceous earth prior to embedding the layer of diatomaceous earth into the softened biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the liquid bath comprises a fertilizer, a fungicide, or a preservative. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the embedded layer of diatomaceous earth is patterned on the softened biodegradable substrate. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 19 , wherein the pattern is a checkerboard pattern.
