Abstract
A cutting edge for a machine. The cutting edge includes a first layer formed of a first material and forming a front surface configured to engage a working material. The cutting edge further including a second layer that extends from the first layer and away from the front surface. The second layer formed of a second material harder than the first material to improve overall wear resistance of the cutting edge.

1 . A cutting edge for a ground engaging machine with a moldboard having a front side, the cutting edge comprising:
a first layer formed of a first material and forming a front surface configured to engage a working material; and a second layer formed of a second material harder than the first material, the second layer extending from the first layer away from the front surface.
2 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the cutting edge includes mounting holes shaped to receive fasteners to mount the cutting edge to the moldboard.
3 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the second has a shape with a trapezoidal cross-section that extends along a length of the cutting edge.
4 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the second layer is coextensive with the first layer at an interface of the first layer and the second layer.
5 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the cutting edge further comprises a third layer extending from the second layer opposite the first layer, the third layer formed of a third material softer than the second layer.
6 . The cutting edge of claim 5 , wherein the third layer is configured to contact the front side of the moldboard.
7 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the second layer has a C scale Rockwell Hardness between 55 and 65.
8 . The cutting edge of claim 1 , wherein the second layer comprises temper resistant steel.
9 . A cutting edge for a ground engaging machine with a moldboard, the cutting edge comprising:
a first end; a second end opposite the first end; a first layer extending from the first end to the second end, the first layer formed of a first material and configured to engage a working material; and a second layer extending from proximate the first end to proximate the second end along an interface with the first material, the second layer formed of a second material harder than the first material.
10 . The cutting edge of claim 9 , wherein the cutting edge includes mounting holes shaped to receive fasteners to mount the cutting edge to the moldboard.
11 . The cutting edge of claim 10 , wherein the mounting holes are located proximate to the second end.
12 . The cutting edge of claim 9 , wherein the cutting edge further comprises a third layer extending from the second layer opposite the first layer, the third layer formed of a third material softer than the second layer.
13 . The cutting edge of claim 12 , wherein the third layer is configured to contact a portion of the machine.
14 . The cutting edge of claim 12 , wherein the third layer has a shape with a trapezoidal cross-section that extends along a length of the cutting edge.
15 . The cutting edge of claim 9 , wherein the second layer has a C scale Rockwell Hardness between 55 and 65.
16 . The cutting edge of claim 9 , wherein the second layer comprises temper resistant steel.
17 . A cutting edge for a ground engaging machine with a moldboard having a front side, the cutting edge comprising:
a first end; a second end opposite the first end; mounting holes shaped to receive fasteners to mount the cutting edge to the moldboard; a first layer formed by a first material and extending from the first end to the second end, the first layer configured to engage a working material; and a second layer having a second material harder than the first material, the second layer extending from the first layer.
18 . The cutting edge of claim 17 , wherein the mounting holes are located proximate to the second end.
19 . The cutting edge of claim 17 , wherein the second layer has a C scale Rockwell Hardness between 55 and 65.
