Therapeutic back support and stabilization

Abstract

A therapeutic back support device including a back support portion that automatically and repeatedly moves forward to maintain engagement with a user's back as the user moves forward with respect to a chair seat. The back support portion substantially resists backward motion and provides substantially continuous therapeutic support to the user's spine pending a release signal.

1 . A method of controlling a chair comprising:
 supporting a seat back portion above a seat portion of said chair;   retracting said back portion to a first extreme lateral position;   when a user is seated on said seat portion, urging said back portion against a back of said user to resist an opposing force of said user's back;   when a user moves away from said seatback portion, further urging said back portion against said back of said user to further resist an opposing force of said user's back; and   in response to a release signal, returning said back portion to said first extreme lateral position.
