Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a novel solution which can be used to detect and analyze instances of micro stutter within a given game, GPU and/or driver version. Embodiments of the present invention may be operable to divide an application session into a set of sub-sessions and perform multiple derivative calculations on time-varying application parameters (e.g., frame rates) measured during each sub-session. Embodiments of the present invention may also be operable to generate separate histograms for each derivative calculation performed. As such, based on calculations performed, embodiments of the present invention may synchronously increment histogram bins representing a corresponding range of performance in real-time. Upon the completion of the application session, sub-session histograms may be compressed and then saved into a log which can be fetched and uploaded to a host computer system for aggregation and storage into a database for server-side optimization analysis.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method comprising:
 receiving, by a host device, one or more sets of performance data from a plurality of client devices, each set of the one or more sets of performance data corresponding to sub-session data measuring a time-varying parameter associated with sub-sessions of an application session of an instance of an application executing on a respective client device of the plurality of client devices;   receiving, by the host device, client data representative of at least one of: one or more hardware configurations of a client device or one or more software configurations of a client device;   analyzing the one or more sets of performance data and the client data to determine one or more configuration settings for executing the application on the client device, at least one of the one or more configuration settings associated with the time-varying parameter; and   sending configuration data representative of the configuration settings to the client device to cause the client device to update at least one of the hardware configurations or the software configurations.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising receiving sets of histogram data associated with the one or more sets of performance data, wherein the analyzing further includes analyzing the sets of histogram data. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising determining one or more other configuration settings for executing the application on another client device, the one or more other configuration settings being different from the configuration settings. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the time-varying parameter is associated with a frame rate. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the time-varying parameter is associated with a power consumption rate. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the host device and the plurality of client devices are associated with a cloud gaming network environment. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more sets of performance data correspond to results of one or more derivative calculations of the time-varying parameter measured during the sub-sessions. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein each set of performance data corresponds to histograms generated for each of the one or more derivative calculations. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein the receiving the one or more sets of performance data includes receiving compressed histogram data corresponding to the histograms. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising detecting, for the client device and based at least in part on a set of performance data corresponding to the client device, one or more instances of micro stutter, wherein the analyzing is executed based at least in part on the detecting the one or more instances of micro stutter. 
     
     
         11 . A method comprising:
 analyzing, by a host device and for each first client device of a plurality of first client devices, first data representative of one or more histogram bins corresponding to measurements of a time-varying parameter during sub-sessions of an application session of an instance of an application executing on the first client device and metadata representative of at least one of a first hardware configuration or a first software configuration of the first client device;   determining, based at least in part on the analyzing and at least one of a second hardware configuration or a second software configuration of a second client device, updated configuration settings for updating at least one of the second hardware configuration or the second software configuration of the second client device; and   sending second data representative of the updated configuration settings to the second client device to cause the second client device to update at least one of the second hardware configuration or the second software configuration.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the one or more histogram bins correspond to derivative calculations of the time-varying parameter. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the determining the updated configuration settings is executed based at least in part on detecting one or more instances of micro stutter on the second client device. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the determining the updated configuration settings is executed based at least in part on the time-varying parameter. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the host device and the plurality of client devices are associated with a cloud gaming network environment. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the time-varying parameter is associated with at least one of a frame rate or a power consumption rate. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the metadata corresponds to at least one of in-application settings, hardware version information, hardware setting information, or operating system type. 
     
     
         18 . A system comprising:
 one or more processors; and   one or more memory devices storing instructions thereon that, when executed using the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to execute operations comprising:
 receiving one or more sets of performance data from a plurality of client devices over a communications network, the one or more sets of performance data each including a set of application sub-session data measuring a time-varying parameter associated with the application; 
 generating analyzed configurations for executing the application on the plurality of client devices based at least in part on the one or more sets of performance data; and 
 sending the analyzed configurations to the plurality of client devices over the communications network. 
   
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the receiving further comprises receiving one or more sets of histogram data associated with the one or more sets of performance data. 
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the receiving further comprises receiving one or more sets of metadata from the plurality of client devices, each set of the one or more sets of metadata including hardware configuration information associated with a respective client device of the plurality of client devices, wherein the generating the analyzed configurations is further based at least in part on the hardware configuration information.
