Abstract

A high protein (up to 40%) tetraploid oat variety is provided that is suitable for large scale oat production using standard farming practices. A tetraploid oat variety includes one or more of lodging resistance, shattering resistance, erect growth habit, and seeds similar to traditional cultivated hexaploid oat, A. sativa. The tetraploid oat variety of the invention can also include a stable fatty acid profile, high iron content, high folic acid content, or high free essential amino acid content. A tetraploid oat variety may be used as foundational seed in a plant breeding program for development of lines and varieties with high protein content. Oat products produced from the tetraploid oat variety of the invention are also included as well as resultant oat foodstuffs such as high protein granola bars, hot cereals food stuffs, cold cereal foodstuffs, snackbars, cookies, gluten-free products, snacks, muffins, pancake mix and the like.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An  Avena magna  variety that includes the following characteristics resulting from a genotype or combination of genotypes found in one or more of an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533):
 a. a statistically significant increase in seed protein content as compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions, and   b. a semi-dwarf height.   
     
     
         2 . The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the statistically significant increase in seed protein content or the semi-dwarf height results from a genotype of combination of genotypes found in  Avena magna  variety 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485).

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the statistically significant increase in seed protein content or the semi-dwarf height results from a genotype of combination of genotypes found in  Avena magna  variety 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534).

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the statistically significant increase in seed protein content or the semi-dwarf height results from a genotype of combination of genotypes found in  Avena magna  variety 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532).

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the statistically significant increase in seed protein content or the semi-dwarf height results from a genotype of combination of genotypes found in  Avena magna  variety 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533). 
     
     
         6 . The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , further comprise an additional characteristic selected from:
 i. a comparable or superior lodging resistance compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions, and   ii. a comparable or superior shattering resistance compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions.

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 6 , wherein the additional characteristic results from a genotype or combination of genotypes found in one or more of an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533). 
     
     
         8 . The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the variety has a further characteristic being superior to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions, the further characteristic selected from:
 time to maturity, 
 seed yield, 
 seed oleic/linoleic ratio, 
 seed iron content, 
 seed folic acid content, and 
 seed free essential amino acid content.

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 8 , wherein the further characteristic results from a genotype or combination of genotypes found in one or more of an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533).

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , further comprising at least one genotypic trait found in the  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533). 
     
     
         11 . The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 1 , wherein the seed protein content is at least double that of  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions. 
     
     
         12 . A population of plants comprising a plurality of plants of the variety of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         13 . Seed of the variety of  claim 1 . 
     
     
         14 . An  Avena magna  variety that includes the following traits that are inherited from one or more of an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533):
 a. a statistically significant increase in seed protein content as compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions, and   b. a semi-dwarf height.   
     
     
         15 . The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 14 , further comprising a characteristic selected from:
 i. a comparable or superior lodging resistance compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions, or   ii. a comparable or superior shattering resistance compared to  Avena sativa  variety ‘Leggett’ when grown under the same environment under the same conditions.

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 15 , wherein the characteristic results from a genotype or combination of genotypes found in one or more of an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533).

The  Avena magna  variety of  claim 15 , wherein the characteristic is inherited from an  Avena magna  variety selected from 96.5.6 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122534), 96.5.34 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122532), 96.5.55 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-125485), and 100.2.235 (American Type Culture Collection accession PTA-122533).
