Abstract
A safety device, and more particularly a device or system of devices for detecting dangerous situations such as the act of drowning of an individual in a body of water or a child that suddenly goes missing or otherwise inactive in a defined area, and issuing a warning to others that the potential dangerous situation is taking place so that the individual can be rescued.

1 . A system for monitoring a swimmer in a swimming area, comprising:
at least one alarm indicator for indicating an alarm condition; a first sensor adapted to generate first swimmer status data about a status of the swimmer; a second sensor adapted to generate second swimmer status data about the status of the swimmer; a processor configured to execute instructions to receive the first swimmer status data over a communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to receive the second swimmer status data over a communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said first swimmer status data for first indications that the swimmer is in distress; and the processor being configured to execute instructions to trigger the alarm condition using said second swimmer status data when said first indication indicates that the swimmer is in distress, wherein said second sensor collects a different type of data than said first sensor.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said first sensor is worn by the swimmer for generating said first swimmer status data.
3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said second sensor includes a video camera for generating said second swimmer status data including video of the swimmer.
4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said video camera is mounted external to said swimming area configured to monitor said swimming area.
5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein said alarm condition includes displaying a location of the swimmer that is in distress on a display, and wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions to zoom in on an image of the swimmer that is in distress for display using said second swimmer status data.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said alarm indicator is worn by the swimmer, and wherein said alarm indicator includes an audio alarm to indicate that the swimmer is in distress.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said first sensor includes a biometric sensor configured generate the first swimmer status data including biometric data from the swimmer.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein said biometric data includes a heart rate of the swimmer.
9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein said biometric data includes data about the breathing of the swimmer.
10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein said biometric data includes a temperature of the swimmer.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said first sensor includes a sensor configured generate the first swimmer status data including data indicating a motion of the swimmer.
12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said first sensor includes a sensor configured generate the first swimmer status data including data indicating a time duration when at least a portion of the swimmer is below water.
13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said second sensor is a video camera configured to monitor the swimmer, and wherein, the processor being also configured to, in response to an alarm condition, display an image on a display of the swimmer when that swimmer is in distress.
14 . A system for monitoring a swimmer in a swimming area, comprising:
at least one alarm indicator for indicating an alarm condition; a first sensor configured generate first swimmer status data about a status of the swimmer; a second sensor adapted to generate second swimmer status data about the status of the swimmer; a processor configured to execute instructions to receive the first swimmer status data over a communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to receive the second swimmer status data over a communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said first swimmer status data for first indications that the swimmer is in distress; the processor further configured to execute instructions to analyze said second swimmer status data for second indications that the swimmer is in distress; and the processor also configured to execute instructions to trigger the alarm condition when both said first indication and said second indication indicate that the swimmer is in distress, wherein said second sensor collects a different type of data than said first sensor.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein said first sensor is worn by the swimmer for generating said first swimmer status data.
16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein said second sensor includes a video camera for generating said second swimmer status data including video of the swimmer.
17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein said video camera is mounted external to said swimming area configured to monitor said swimming area.
18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein said alarm condition includes displaying a location of the swimmer that is in distress on a display, and wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions to zoom in on an image of the swimmer that is in distress for display using said second swimmer status data.
19 . The system of claim 14 , wherein said first sensor includes a biometric sensor configured generate the first swimmer status data including biometric data from the swimmer.
20 . The system of claim 14 , wherein said second sensor is a video camera configured to monitor the swimmer, and wherein, the processor being also configured to, in response to an alarm condition, display an image on a display of the swimmer when that swimmer is in distress.
21 . A system for monitoring a swimmer in a swimming area, comprising:
at least one alarm indicator for indicating an alarm condition, said alarm indicator including a display; a first sensor configured to be worn by the swimmer and adapted to generate first swimmer status data about a status of the swimmer; a video camera configured to be placed in or near the swimming area and adapted to generate second swimmer status data about the status of the swimmer; a processor configured to execute instructions to receive the first swimmer status data over a wireless communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to receive the second swimmer status data over a communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said first swimmer status data for first indications that the swimmer is in distress; the processor further configured to execute instructions to analyze said second swimmer status data for second indications that the swimmer is in distress; and the processor also configured to execute instructions to trigger the alarm condition when both said first indication and said second indication indicate that the swimmer is in distress, said alarm condition including displaying an image of the swimmer in distress on the display.
22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein said first sensor includes a biometric sensor configured generate the first swimmer status data including biometric data from the swimmer.
23 . A system for monitoring a swimmer in a swimming area, comprising:
at least one alarm indicator for indicating an alarm condition, said alarm indicator including a display; a first sensor configured to be worn by the swimmer and adapted to generate first swimmer status data including biometric information about the swimmer; a second sensor adapted to generate second swimmer status data including information about an activity level of the swimmer; a processor configured to execute instructions to receive the first swimmer status data over a wireless communication network; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said first swimmer status data to determine when the swimmer exhibits biometric parameters indicating that the swimmer is in distress; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said second swimmer status data to determine when the swimmer exhibits normal swimming activities; the processor also configured to execute instructions to analyze said second swimmer status data to determine when the swimmer exhibits activities indicating that the swimmer is in distress; and the processor configured to execute instructions to trigger the alarm condition when it is determined both that the swimmer exhibits biometric parameters indicating that the swimmer is in distress and also the swimmer exhibits activities indicating that the swimmer is in distress, said alarm condition including indicating a location and/or displaying an image of the swimmer.
24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein said first sensor is configured to be worn by the swimmer and adapted to transmit the second swimmer status information to the processor in a wireless manner.
25 . The system of claim 24 , wherein said second sensor is comprised of one or more video cameras located about the swimming location.
