Abstract
A method for operating a drilling rig system includes moving a first tubular stand from a fingerboard to a stand handoff position, applying dope to a lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position, moving the first tubular stand from the stand handoff position to well center, conducting one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand, and applying the dope to a lower connection of a second tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method for operating a drilling rig system, comprising:
moving a first tubular stand from a fingerboard to a stand handoff position; applying dope to a lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position; moving the first tubular stand from the stand handoff position to well center; conducting one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; and applying the dope to a lower connection of a second tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising washing the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position.
3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising drying the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position after washing the lower connection of the first tubular stand and before applying the dope thereto.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the second tubular stand from the fingerboard to the stand handoff position while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting two or more tubular joints together in a mousehole to form a third tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising moving the third tubular stand from the mousehole into the fingerboard while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting two or more tubular joints together in a mousehole to form the second tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising moving the second tubular stand from the mousehole into the fingerboard while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the dope comprises using a doping and washing mechanism located at or near to a setback platform, wherein the lower connection is supported on the setback platform at least when the first tubular stand is in the fingerboard.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein conducting the one or more well-center activities comprises:
connecting the first tubular stand to a top drive; connecting the first tubular stand to a drill string deployed at least partially into a wellbore; rotating the first tubular stand and the drill string using the top drive; disconnecting the top drive from the first tubular stand; and raising the top drive away from the first tubular stand.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein applying the dope to the lower connection of the second tubular stand occurs before the top drive is raised away from the first tubular stand to an elevation sufficient to receive the second tubular stand at well center.
12 . A rig control system for a drilling rig, comprising:
one or more processors; and a memory system comprising one or more non-transitory, computer-readable media storing instructions that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause the rig control system to perform operations using the drilling rig, the operations comprising:
moving a first tubular stand from a fingerboard of the drilling rig to a stand handoff position;
applying dope to a lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position;
moving the first tubular stand from the stand handoff position to well center;
conducting one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; and
applying the dope to a lower connection of a second tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
13 . The rig control system of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise washing the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position.
14 . The rig control system of claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise drying the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position after washing the lower connection of the first tubular stand and before applying the dope thereto.
15 . The rig control system of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise moving the second tubular stand from a racked position in the fingerboard to the stand handoff position while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
16 . The rig control system of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise connecting two or more tubular joints together in a mousehole to form the second tubular stand while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
17 . The rig control system of claim 12 , wherein conducting the one or more well-center activities comprises:
connecting the first tubular stand to a top drive; connecting the first tubular stand to a drill string deployed at least partially into a wellbore; rotating the first tubular stand and the drill string using the top drive; disconnecting the top drive from the first tubular stand; and raising the top drive away from the first tubular stand.
18 . The rig control system of claim 17 , wherein applying the dope to the lower connection of the second tubular stand occurs before the top drive is raised away from the first tubular stand to an elevation sufficient to receive the second tubular stand at well center.
19 . A method for operating a drilling rig system, comprising:
moving a first tubular stand from a fingerboard to a stand handoff position; washing a lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position; drying the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position after washing the lower connection of the first tubular stand; applying dope to the lower connection of the first tubular stand in the stand handoff position after washing and drying the lower connection of the first tubular stand; moving the first tubular stand from the stand handoff position to well center; conducting one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; washing a lower connection of a second tubular stand in the stand handoff position while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; drying the lower connection of the second tubular stand in the stand handoff position after washing the lower connection of the second tubular stand and while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; applying the dope to the lower connection of the second tubular stand after washing and drying the lower connection of the second tubular stand and while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand; and moving the second tubular stand from a racked position in the fingerboard to the stand handoff position while conducting the one or more well-center activities using the first tubular stand.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein conducting the one or more well-center activities comprises:
connecting the first tubular stand to a top drive; connecting the first tubular stand to a drill string deployed at least partially into a wellbore; rotating the first tubular stand and the drill string using the top drive; disconnecting the top drive from the first tubular stand; and raising the top drive away from the first tubular stand, wherein applying the dope to the lower connection of the second tubular stand occurs before the top drive is raised away from the first tubular stand to an elevation sufficient to receive the second tubular stand at well center.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
