Abstract

A method for provisioning a volume of data is disclosed. The method involves identifying a set of rules associated with the volume of data, wherein the set of rules includes at least two conflicting rules, prioritizing the at least two conflicting rules, placing the volume of data on a first computer system according to the prioritization, collecting performance metrics corresponding to the placed volume of data, computing a score based on the collected performance metrics, determining if the computed score is acceptable, determining that the placement is successful if the computer score is determined to be acceptable, and changing the prioritization of the at least two conflicting rules and placing the volume of data on a second computer system according to the changed prioritization if the score is determined to be unacceptable.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A method for provisioning a volume of data, the method comprising:
identifying a set of rules associated with the volume of data, wherein the set of rules includes at least two conflicting rules; prioritizing the at least two conflicting rules; placing the volume of data on a first computer system according to the prioritization; collecting performance metrics corresponding to the placed volume of data; computing a score based on the collected performance metrics; determining if the computed score is acceptable; determining that the placement is successful if the computer score is determined to be acceptable; and changing the prioritization of the at least two conflicting rules and placing the volume of data on a second computer system according to the changed prioritization if the score is determined to be unacceptable.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the volume of data is placed on the second computer system only during hours when the second computer system is not used.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the volume of data is placed on the second computer system during a period of time in which activity is relatively low.

4 . A non-transitory computer readable medium that stores computer executable code, which when executed by one or more processors, implements a method for provisioning a volume of data, the method comprising:
identifying a set of rules associated with the volume of data, wherein the set of rules includes at least two conflicting rules; prioritizing the at least two conflicting rules; placing the volume of data on a first computer system according to the prioritization; collecting performance metrics corresponding to the placed volume of data; computing a score based on the collected performance metrics; determining if the computed score is acceptable; determining that the placement is successful if the computer score is determined to be acceptable; and changing the prioritization of the at least two conflicting rules and placing the volume of data on a second computer system according to the changed prioritization if the score is determined to be unacceptable.

5 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the volume of data is placed on the second computer system only during hours when the second computer system is not used.

6 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the volume of data is placed on the second computer system during a period of time in which activity is relatively low.
