Abstract

A method and an apparatus are provided for a portable device having a touch display. An original-view screen is displayed on a full area of the touch display in a portrait orientation. In response to a received input event, the mini-view screen is displayed on a partial area of the touch display. The mini-view screen is a reduced version of the original-view screen. It is detected that an orientation of the portable device is changed from the portrait orientation to a landscape orientation. The mini-view screen is temporarily deactivated and icons of the original view screen are displayed on the full area in the landscape orientation. It is detected that an orientation of the portable device is returned from the landscape orientation to the portrait orientation. The mini-view screen is re-activated and displayed on the partial area.

What is claimed is:

         1 . A method for a portable device having a touch display, comprising:
 displaying an original-view screen on a full area of the touch display in a portrait orientation, the original-view screen comprising one or more icons; receiving an input event for activating a mini-view screen; in response to the input event for activating the mini-view screen, displaying the mini-view screen on a partial area of the touch display, wherein the mini-view screen is a reduced version of the original-view screen, and wherein the mini-view screen comprises one or more reduced version icons corresponding to the one or more icons; detecting that an orientation of the portable device is changed from the portrait orientation to a landscape orientation while the mini-view screen is displayed; in response to the orientation change to the landscape orientation, temporarily deactivating the mini-view screen and displaying the one or more icons of the original view screen on the full area of the touch display in the landscape orientation; detecting that an orientation of the portable device is returned from the landscape orientation to the portrait orientation; and in response to the orientation returning to the portrait orientation, re-activating and displaying the mini-view screen on the partial area of the touch display.

         2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
 when an input event for changing location of the mini-view screen is detected, allowing the mini-view screen to be movable around the touch display by a subsequent drag event.

         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein:
 the input event for changing location of the mini-view screen comprises an input event in at least part of a region of the mini-view screen; and the subsequent drag event maintains contact with the at least part of the region.

         4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the input event for changing location of the mini-view screen comprises a touch gesture event of dragging across a distance of the touch display.

         5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, while the mini-view screen is displayed on the touch display, portions of the touch display not displaying the mini-view screen are blank.

         6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mini-view screen is at least one of opaque and translucent.

         7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more icons corresponds to a respective one of one or more functions, each of the one or more functions comprising at least one of terminating an application and executing an application.

         8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the input event for displaying the mini-view screen comprises a preset dragging touch gesture exceeding a speed threshold.

         9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein, the mini-view screen is displayed at a location on the touch display adjacent to a side edge of the touch display.

         10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mini-view screen comprises at least one row of one or more graphical user interface (GUI) items along a side of the reduced version of the original-view screen.

         11 . A portable device, comprising:
 a touch display which receives input, and displays an original-view screen on a full area of the touch display in a portrait orientation, the original-view screen comprising one or more icons; and one or more processors which:
 receive an input event for activating a mini-view screen;
 in response to the input event for activating the mini-view screen, control the touch display to display the mini-view screen on a partial area of the touch display, wherein the mini-view screen is a reduced version of the original-view screen, and wherein the mini-view screen comprises one or more reduced version icons corresponding to the one or more icons;
 detect that an orientation of the portable device is changed from the portrait orientation to a landscape orientation while the mini-view screen is displayed;
 in response to the orientation change to the landscape orientation, temporarily deactivate the mini-view screen and control the touch display to display the one or more icons of the original view screen on the full area of the touch display in the landscape orientation;
 detect that an orientation of the portable device is returned from the landscape orientation to the portrait orientation; and
 in response to the orientation returning to the portrait orientation, re-activate the mini-view screen and control the touch display to display the mini-view screen on the partial area of the touch display.

         12 . The portable device of claim 11 , wherein, when an input event for changing location of the mini-view screen is detected, the one or more processors allow the mini-view screen to be movable around the touch display by a subsequent drag event.

         13 . The portable device of claim 12 , wherein:
 the input event for changing location of the mini-view screen comprises an input event in at least part of a region of mini-view screen, and the subsequent drag event maintains contact with the at least part of the region.
