A method for the prophylaxis of diabetes, diabetic complications, insulin resistance syndrome, metabolic syndrome, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, cardiac failure, cardiomyopathy, myocardial ischemia, brain ischemia, cerebral apoplexy, pulmonary hypertension, hyperlactacidcemia, mitochondrial disease, mitochondrial encephalomyopathy or cancer in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal a pharmaceutically effective amount of a compound [I] or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof:
