Abstract

Method for cleaning a material contaminated with an organic pollutant by heat treatment, where energy for heating the material is provided by direct heat treatment of the material in a hammermill. An organic polar additive with a boiling temperature above 100° C. is added to and mixed with the material prior to the direct heat treatment. A use of the organic polar additive is described as well.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
. A method for thermal separation of a non-polar organic compound from a particulate material, the method comprising:
providing the particulate material; adding an organic polar additive to the particulate material; and separating the non-polar organic component from the particulate material in a gaseous phase using a steam distillation process, where a hammermill provides energy by direct heat treatment for heating the particulate material and the organic polar additive, and wherein the organic polar additive contributes with vapor to the steam distillation process.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the steam distillation process is carried out at a temperature above 100° C. within the material and at an ambient pressure.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an alcohol.

. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the alcohol is selected from a group consisting of monohydric alcohols, polyhydric alcohols, aliphatic alcohol and alicyclic alcohols.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an aldehyde.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an amide.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an amine.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an ether.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an ester.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is a ketone.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is a nitrile.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the additive is an organic acid.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein a gaseous phase released from the heat treated material is condensed and separated into a first fraction comprising the additive and a second fraction comprising a residue.

. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the second fraction comprises oil.

. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the material comprises pre-treated drill cuttings.

. A method comprising using an organic polar substance with a boiling temperature above 100° C. as an additive mixed with a particulate material contaminated with an organic pollutant prior to a steam distillation process of the material with a direct heat treatment as an energy source, said direct heat treatment being provided by a hammermill.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an alcohol.

. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the alcohol is selected from a group consisting of monohydric alcohols, polyhydric alcohols, aliphatic alcohol and alicyclic alcohols.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an aldehyde.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an amide.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an amine.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an ether.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is an ester.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is a ketone.

. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the additive is a nitrile.
