Abstract

The invention generally relates to methods to inhibit inflammation or pathogen infection by administering at least one anionic lipid or compositions comprising at least one anionic lipid to an individual. The invention also relates to methods to prevent or inhibit respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection by administering at least one anionic lipid or compositions comprising at least one anionic lipid to an individual. The invention further relates to compositions comprising randomly mixed surfactant lipids and methods to produce the compositions.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 54 . (canceled)

         55 . A composition, comprising:
a lipid bilayer which includes a) a first layer having a preparation of randomly mixed surfactant lipids therein, and b) a second layer having at least one substantially homogeneous lipid preparation therein of at least one anionic lipid or related compound, wherein the lipid preparation includes at least one anionic lipid having the following characteristics:
 i) a hydrophobic portion,
ii) a negatively charged portion, and
 iii) an uncharged, polar portion;

wherein there is no significant fusion or intermixing of lipids between said first and second layers.

56 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the lipids in the second layer comprise at least 1% of the total lipids in the composition.

57 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is phosphatidylglycerol, or a derivative thereof.

58 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG), or a derivative thereof

59 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is dimyristoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (DMPG), or a derivative thereof.

60 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is unsaturated phosphatidylinositol, or a derivative thereof.

61 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an anionic sphingolipid or a derivative thereof

62 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an anionic glycerolipid or a derivative thereof.

63 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an unsaturated or saturated lyso-phosphatidylglycerol, or a derivative thereof.

64 . The composition of claim 55 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an unsaturated or saturated lyso-phosphatidylinositol or a derivative thereof

65 . A composition, comprising: a random mixture of surfactant lipids; wherein at least 50% of the lipid content in the composition consists of at least one anionic lipid or related compound having
a hydrophobic portion, b) a negatively charged portion, and c) an uncharged, polar portion.

66 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is phosphatidylglycerol, or a derivative thereof.

67 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is palmitoyl-oleoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG), or a derivative thereof.

68 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is dimyristoyl-phosphatidylglycerol (DMPG), or a derivative thereof.

69 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is unsaturated phosphatidylinositol, or a derivative thereof.

70 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an anionic sphingolipid or a derivative thereof.

71 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an anionic glycerolipid or a derivative thereof.

72 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an unsaturated or saturated lyso-phosphatidylglycerol, or a derivative thereof.

73 . The composition of claim 65 , wherein the anionic lipid or related compound is an unsaturated or saturated lyso-phosphatidylinositol or a derivative thereof.
