System and method for mode switching
Abstract
Systems and methods described provide dynamic and intelligent ways to change the required level of user interaction during use of a monitoring device. The systems and methods generally relate to real time switching between a first or initial mode of user interaction and a second or new mode of user interaction. In some cases, the switching will be automatic and transparent to the user, and in other cases user notification may occur. The mode switching generally affects the user's interaction with the device, and not just internal processing. The mode switching may relate to calibration modes, data transmission modes, control modes, or the like.

21 . A method of monitoring glucose using a processor in a monitoring device including sensor electronics coupled to a glucose sensor, the method comprising:
a. receiving measurement data from sensor electronics indicative of a subject glucose concentration measured by a glucose sensor for use at a monitoring device operating in a first mode, wherein while in the first mode the measurement data is used as the only source of glucose concentration data for a host wearing the glucose sensor; b. using the processor, evaluating the glucose concentration data to determine whether the glucose concentration data meets one or more mode transition criteria, the one or more mode transition criteria being indicative of the glucose concentration data being insufficient for use as a standalone indicator of glucose concentration of a host; and c. using the processor, determining that a transition to a second mode is appropriate based on the glucose concentration data meeting at least one of the one or more mode transition criteria, wherein while in the second mode at least one additional source other than the glucose sensor is used for obtaining glucose concentration data for the host; and d. displaying an indication of the determination on the user interface of the monitoring device.
22 . A system for monitoring glucose in which a glucose monitor is in signal communication with a glucose sensor through sensor electronics, comprising:
a. a receiver configured to receive measurement data from sensor electronics indicative of a subject glucose concentration measured by a glucose sensor for use at a monitoring device operating in a first mode, wherein while in the first mode the measurement data is used as the only source of glucose concentration data for a host wearing the glucose sensor; b. a processor configured to evaluate the glucose concentration data to determine whether the glucose concentration data meets one or more mode transition criteria, the one or more mode transition criteria being indicative of the glucose concentration data being insufficient for use as a standalone indicator of glucose concentration of a host; and c. the processor configured to determine that a transition to a second mode is appropriate based on the glucose concentration data meeting at least one of the one or more mode transition criteria, wherein while in the second mode at least one additional source other than the glucose sensor is used for obtaining glucose concentration data for the host; and d. the processor configured to display an indication of the determination on the user interface of the monitoring device.
23 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the first and second modes are selected from a non-adjunctive mode and an adjunctive mode.
24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the first mode is a non-adjunctive mode and the second mode is an adjunctive mode.
25 . The system of claim 24 , wherein, when in a non-adjunctive mode, the processor is configured to calculate a recommended insulin bolus and to display the calculated recommended insulin bolus.
26 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the at least one additional source includes external data.
27 . The system of claim 26 , wherein the external data is from an activity monitor, a sleep monitor, a medicament pump, GPS device, a redundant analyte sensor, or a smart pen, or combinations of the above.
28 . The system of claim 26 , wherein the external data is from a fingerstick blood glucose meter.
29 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the fingerstick blood glucose meter is integral to the system.
30 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the one or more mode transition criteria include a measured glucose level.
31 . The system of claim 22 , wherein the one or more mode transition criteria includes one or more parameters related to usability of a signal from the glucose sensor.
32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the one or more parameters includes one or more parameters selected from the group consisting of accuracy, reliability, stability, confidence, and/or glycemic urgency index.
33 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the one or more parameters include a level of noise or one or more faults detected in the signal, and wherein the one or more transition criteria include a threshold level of noise or a predetermined type or level of fault.
34 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the group consisting of: data from diagnostic routines indicating a shift in sensitivity; data entered by a user about a perceived error; data from a connected device; data from historic analyte values; time of day; a day of the week; whether a glucose value is high or low as compared to respective thresholds; a glucose urgency index; data about glucose concentration value variability; data about a level of user responsiveness; sensor signal value trajectory pre- and post-insertion of a new sensor; redundant or overlapping sensor data; user feedback on alerts and alarms; meal or exercise data as compared to predicted signal responses to meal or exercise data; a level of confidence in device self-calibration.
35 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the one or more mode transition criteria is based in part on the first mode in which the monitoring device operates.
