Composition, System, and Method for Ectoparasite Deterrence and Treatment

Abstract

Natural compositions of three essential oils, a carrier, and a solvent are effective as both a head lice deterrent and treatment of pediculosis capitis. In some embodiments, the compositions comprise, at least, essential tea tree oil present in an amount of about 8-25 wt. %, essential peppermint oil in an amount of about 2-20 wt. %, essential lavender oil in an amount of about 1-25 wt. %, propylene glycol in an amount of about 10-50 wt. %, and SD alcohol 40B in an amount of about 20-80 wt. %. A system comprises the compositions used in combination with articles of manufacture, and more specifically hair accessories such as hairbands, hair ties, and other personal products treated with one or more compositions. A method comprises administering the system to a user.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A composition for ectoparasite deterrence and treatment for preventative application on a human hair accessory configured to be worn on a human head, comprising:
 at least one active ingredient;   at least one carrier; and   at least one solvent.   
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , further comprising a first active ingredient, a second active ingredient, and a third active ingredient, wherein the first active ingredient, the second active ingredient, and the third active ingredient are each selected from the group consisting of: anise oil, bay oil, bergamot oil, boronia oil, canola oil, carrot oil, cassia oil, catnip oil, cedarwood oil, chamomile oil, cinnamon oil, citronella oil, clary sage oil, clove oil, eucalyptus oil, garlic oil, ginger oil, geranium oil, grapefruit oil, hazelnut oil, jasmine oil, jojoba oil, lavender oil, lavandin oil, lemon oil, lime oil, mandarin oil, nutmeg oil, orange oil, palma rosa oil, patchouli oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, rosewood oil, sage oil, sandalwood oil, spear mint oil, star anise oil, tea tree oil, tangerine oil, thyme oil, verbena oil, white clover oil, and ylang ylang oil. 
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 2 , wherein the first active ingredient is tea tree oil comprising up to 25 wt. % of the composition, the second active ingredient is peppermint oil comprising up to 15 wt. % of the composition, the third active ingredient is lavender oil comprising up to 10 wt. % of the composition, the at least one carrier is propylene glycol comprising up to 30 wt. % of the composition, and the at least one solvent is SD alcohol 40B comprising up to 65 wt. % of the composition.

The composition of  claim 2 , wherein the first active ingredient is tea tree oil comprising 8-25 wt. % of the composition, the second active ingredient is peppermint oil comprising 2-20 wt. % of the composition, the third active ingredient is lavender oil comprising 1-25 wt. % of the composition, the at least one carrier comprises propylene glycol comprising 10-50 wt. % of the composition, and the at least one solvent comprises alcohol 40B comprising 20-80 wt. % of the composition. 
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein
 a.) the first active ingredient is tea tree oil comprising 14-18 wt. % of the total composition,   b.) the second active ingredient is peppermint oil comprising 4-8 wt. % of the total composition,   c.) the third active ingredient is lavender oil comprising 2-6 wt. % of the total composition,   d.) the carrier is propylene glycol comprising 15-25 wt. % of the total composition, and   e.) the solvent is SD alcohol 40B comprising 45-65 wt. % of the total composition.   
     
     
         6 . A composition for ectoparasite deterrence and treatment, comprising:
 a first active ingredient as tea tree oil up to 25 wt. % of the composition,   a second active ingredient is peppermint oil up to 15 wt. % of the composition,   a third active ingredient is lavender oil up to 10 wt. % of the composition,   at least one carrier comprising at least propylene glycol up to 30 wt. % of the composition, and   at least one solvent comprising at least SD alcohol 40B up to 65 wt. % of the composition,   wherein each of the first active ingredient, second active ingredient, third active ingredient, carrier, and solvent together total 100 wt. % of the composition.   
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 6 , comprising:
 a.) the first active ingredient as tea tree oil comprising 14-18 wt. % of the total composition,   b.) the second active ingredient as peppermint oil comprising 4-8 wt. % of the total composition,   c.) the third active ingredient as lavender oil comprising 2-6 wt. % of the total composition,   d.) the at least one carrier as propylene glycol comprising 15-25 wt. % of the total composition, and   e.) the at least one solvent as SD alcohol 40B comprising 45-65 wt. % of the total composition;   wherein each of the first active ingredient, second active ingredient, third active ingredient, carrier, and solvent together total 100 wt. % of the composition.
