Abstract

A dialysis system is disclosed. The dialysis system includes a water purification unit, at least one pump in fluid communication with the water purification unit, a first concentrate source for creating peritoneal dialysis fluid, a second concentrate source for creating blood treatment dialysis fluid, a blood filter for receiving the blood treatment dialysis fluid, and a control unit. The control unit controls the at least one pump to perform a peritoneal dialysis treatment by delivering, to a patient, peritoneal dialysis fluid that is mixed from the water and concentrate from the first concentrate source. The control unit also controls the at least one pump to perform a blood treatment by delivering, to the blood filter, blood treatment dialysis fluid that is mixed from the water and concentrate from the second concentrate source.

The invention is claimed as follows: 
     
         1 : A dialysis system comprising:
 a water purification unit;   at least one pump in fluid communication with the water purification unit;   a first at least one source of concentrate that creates peritoneal dialysis fluid when mixed with water from the water purification unit;   a second at least one source of concentrate that creates blood treatment dialysis fluid when mixed with water from the water purification unit;   a peritoneal dialysis connection set;   a blood filter positioned and arranged to receive the blood treatment dialysis fluid; and   a control unit programmed to
 (i) control the at least one pump to perform a peritoneal dialysis treatment by (a) mixing water from the water purification unit with concentrate from the first at least one source of concentrate to create the peritoneal dialysis fluid, and (b) delivering the peritoneal dialysis fluid to a patient via the peritoneal dialysis connection set, and 
 (ii) control the at least one pump to perform a blood treatment by (a) mixing water from the water purification unit with concentrate from the second at least one source of concentrate to create the blood treatment dialysis fluid, and (b) delivering the blood treatment dialysis fluid to the blood filter. 
   
     
     
         2 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the first at least one source of concentrate and the second at least one source of concentrate are interchangeably fluidly communicated with the at least one pump. 
     
     
         3 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the second at least one source of concentrate includes at least one of: (i) an acid container, or (ii) a bicarbonate cartridge. 
     
     
         4 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the concentrate from the first at least one source of concentrate includes at least one of dextrose, icodextrin, amino acids, or bicarbonate. 
     
     
         5 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the peritoneal dialysis connection set is removably fluidly communicated with the at least one pump. 
     
     
         6 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , which includes at least one conductivity sensor, the control unit programmed to use output data from the at least one conductivity sensor to mix the water with the concentrate from at least one of the first or second sources. 
     
     
         7 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the control unit is programmed to control the at least one pump to pump the peritoneal dialysis fluid through the blood filter during the peritoneal dialysis treatment. 
     
     
         8 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , which includes a heater to heat at least one of the water, the peritoneal dialysis fluid, or the blood treatment dialysis fluid. 
     
     
         9 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one pump is under control of the control unit to pump the concentrate from the first at least one source of concentrate for mixing with the water. 
     
     
         10 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one pump is under control of the control unit to pump the concentrate from the second at least one source of concentrate for mixing with the water. 
     
     
         11 : The dialysis system of  claim 1 , wherein the water purification unit receives the water from an online water source. 
     
     
         12 . : A dialysis system comprising:
 a dialysis fluid pump;   a dialysis fluid line;   a blood filter in fluid communication with the dialysis fluid pump via the dialysis fluid line;   an extracorporeal circuit in fluid communication with the blood filter;   a blood pump in fluid communication with the blood filter via the extracorporeal circuit;   at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate;   at least one blood treatment concentrate; and   a control unit programmed to
 (i) in a first treatment create peritoneal dialysis fluid by combining purified water with the at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate, and 
 (ii) in a second treatment create blood treatment dialysis fluid by combining purified water with the at least one blood treatment concentrate. 
   
     
     
         13 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , which includes at least one conductivity sensor, the control unit programmed to use output data from the at least one conductivity sensor to combine the purified water with at least one of the at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate or the at least one blood treatment concentrate. 
     
     
         14 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , which includes at least one proportioning pump under control of the control unit for pumping the purified water and at least one of the at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate or the at least one blood treatment concentrate. 
     
     
         15 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , wherein the at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate and the at least one blood treatment concentrate are interchangeably fluidly communicated with the purified water. 
     
     
         16 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , wherein the control unit is programmed to control at least one of the blood pump or the dialysis fluid pump to pump the peritoneal dialysis fluid through the blood filter during the peritoneal dialysis treatment. 
     
     
         17 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , wherein the control unit is programmed to control the dialysis fluid pump to prime the dialysis fluid line with the peritoneal dialysis fluid before performing the first treatment. 
     
     
         18 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , which includes a heater to heat at least one of the water, the peritoneal dialysis fluid, or the blood treatment dialysis fluid. 
     
     
         19 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , wherein the at least one peritoneal dialysis concentrate includes at least one of dextrose, icodextrin, amino acids, or bicarbonate. 
     
     
         20 : The dialysis system of  claim 12 , wherein the at least one blood treatment concentrate includes at least one of: (i) an acid, or (ii) a bicarbonate.
