Abstract
Methods for treating various cancers by administering one or more compounds that target the dimeric protein survivin are disclosed. Pharmaceutical compositions containing such compounds are also disclosed, along with general methods of identifying anti-cancer compounds that target oncogenic dimeric proteins. Exemplary compounds that can be used in the disclosed methods of treatment and pharmaceutical compositions have the chemical structure:

27 . A method of treating cancer, the method comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising a survivin-targeting compound having the chemical structure
or is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, whereby the cancer is treated in the subject.

The method of claim 27 where the composition is administered to the subject by a route selected from the group consisting of orally, topically, nasally, parenterally, paracancerally, transmucosally, transdermally, intramuscularly, intravenously, intradermally, subcutaneously, intraperitoneally, intraventricularly, intracranially, intratumorally, or pulmonary delivery.
29 . The method of claim 27 where the cancer treated is selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and leukemia.
30 . The method of claim 29 where the cancer treated is prostate cancer.
31 . A pharmaceutical composition comprising a survivin-targeting compound having the chemical structure
or is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
32 . A survivin-targeting compound for use in treating cancer in a subject, where the survivin-targeting compound has the chemical structure
or is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
33 . The survivin-targeting compound of claim 32 where the compound is for use in treating cancer that is selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and leukemia.
34 . The survivin-targeting compound of claim 32 where the compound is for use in treating prostate cancer.

The survivin-targeting compound of claim 32 where the compound is administered to the subject by a route selected from the group consisting of orally, topically, nasally, parenterally, paracancerally, transmucosally, transdermally, intramuscularly, intravenously, intradermally, subcutaneously, intraperitoneally, intraventricularly, intracranially, intratumorally, and pulmonary delivery.
36 . A survivin-targeting compound for use in manufacturing a medicament for treating cancer in a subject, where the survivin-targeting compound has the chemical structure
or is a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
37 . The survivin-targeting compound of claim 36 where the medicament is for treating a cancer selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and leukemia.
38 . The survivin-targeting compound of claim 37 , where the medicament is for treating prostate cancer.
