Abstract
A medical device includes an instrument sterile adapter (ISA) that includes a first plate and a second plate. The first plate includes a mounting surface and a plurality of landing pads. The mounting surface provides a first datum plane for mounting the ISA on a carriage that includes actuators. The plurality of landing pads extend through the second plate and provide a second datum plane for a surgical instrument coupled to the ISA such that the first datum plane and the second datum plane are parallel surfaces separated by a fixed distance. The medical device may include a plastic sheet having opposing first and second sides with the first plate located on the first side and the second plate located on the second side. The instrument sterile drape may include a pouch shaped to fit around the carriage with the ISA capturing the pouch between the top and bottom plates.

1 . A medical device comprising:
an instrument sterile adapter (ISA) comprising a first plate and a second plate; wherein the first plate comprises a mounting surface and a plurality of landing pads; wherein the mounting surface provides a first datum plane for mounting the ISA on a carriage that includes actuators; and wherein the plurality of landing pads extend through the second plate and provide a second datum plane for a surgical instrument coupled to the ISA such that the first datum plane and the second datum plane are parallel surfaces separated by a fixed distance.
2 . The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a plastic sheet comprising a first side and a second side reverse of the first side; wherein the first plate is located on the first side of the plastic sheet; and wherein the second plate is located on the second side of the plastic sheet.
3 . The medical device of claim 2 , wherein:
the plastic sheet is a single layer of thermoplastic polyurethane about 100 micrometers (0.004 of an inch) thick in the form of a tube; and the plastic sheet includes a lubricant.
4 . The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a plastic sheet comprising a first opening; and a pouch comprising a second opening; wherein the pouch is coupled to the plastic sheet at the first opening; wherein the pouch is shaped to fit around the carriage; and wherein the ISA is coupled to the pouch at the second opening.
5 . The medical device of claim 4 , wherein:
the pouch comprises a first side and a second side reverse of the first side; the first plate is located on the first side of the pouch; and the second plate is located on the second side of the pouch.
6 . The medical device of claim 4 , wherein:
the pouch is shaped to provide a loose form fit around the carriage.
7 . The medical device of claim 4 , wherein:
the pouch is made from a polyurethane.
8 . The medical device of claim 4 , wherein:
the second plate is joined to the first plate by passing pins between the first and second plates and through the pouch and heat staking the pins to form a permanent assembly.
9 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein:
the first plate comprises a pocket having a third opening in a surface of the first plate oriented away from the second plate; the second plate comprises a fourth opening in a surface of the second plate oriented away from the first plate; the ISA further comprises a presence pin retained in the pocket; and a portion of the presence pin extends through the fourth opening.
10 . The medical device of claim 9 , wherein:
at least a portion of the pocket is within a protrusion that extends from the surface of the first plate.
11 . The medical device of claim 10 wherein:
