Abstract

A breathing support system is provided. The system may include a breathing support device configured to deliver gas to a patient and a display device associated with the breathing support device. The display device may be configured to display a work of breathing graphic indicating one or more work of breathing measures regarding the patient's breathing.

         6 . A ventilator system comprising:
 at least one processor; and   at least one memory storing computer executable instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the ventilator system to:
 display a work of breathing (WOB) graphic, wherein the WOB graphic is of a constant size and includes numerical indices displayed in units of at least one of: joules (J), joules per liter (J/L), joules per minute (J/min), or joules per minute per kilogram (J/min/kg); 
 in response to receiving first data from one or more sensors, calculate a first patient work of breathing; 
 display, on the WOB graphic, a patient work of breathing indicator representing the patient work of breathing; 
 in response to receiving second data from the one or more sensors, calculate a second patient work of breathing; and 
 move the patient work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second patient work of breathing. 
   
     
     
         7 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein the computer executable instructions when executed further cause the ventilator system to:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculate a first total work of breathing;   display on the WOB graphic a total work of breathing indicator representing the first total work of breathing;   in response to receiving the second data from the one or more sensors, calculate a second total work of breathing; and   move the total work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second total work of breathing.   
     
     
         8 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein the first data is one of pressure or flow of gas delivered to a patient during ventilation by the ventilator system. 
     
     
         9 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein the computer executable instructions when executed further cause the ventilator system to:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculate an elastic work of breathing and a resistive work of breathing; and   display an elastic-resistive work of breathing indicator representing the elastic work of breathing and the resistive work of breathing on a WOB scale related to the WOB graphic.   
     
     
         10 . The ventilator system according to  claim 7 , wherein the computer executable instructions when executed further cause the ventilator system to:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculate a device work of breathing; and   display a device work of breathing indicator representing the device work of breathing associated with the first total work of breathing on the WOB graphic.   
     
     
         11 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein the numerical indices are displayed in the units of joules per minute (J/min). 
     
     
         12 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein the numerical indices are displayed on at least one of a circular scale, a semicircular scale, or an elliptical scale. 
     
     
         13 . The ventilator system according to  claim 6 , wherein numerical indices are divided into sectors corresponding to different work of breathing components. 
     
     
         14 . A ventilator-implemented method comprising:
 displaying a work of breathing (WOB) graphic, wherein the WOB graphic is of a constant size and includes numerical indices displayed in units of at least one of: joules (J), joules per liter (J/L), joules per minute (J/min), or joules per minute per kilogram (J/min/kg);   in response to receiving first data from one or more sensors, calculating a first patient work of breathing;   displaying, on the WOB graphic, a patient work of breathing indicator representing the patient work of breathing;   in response to receiving second data from the one or more sensors, calculating a second patient work of breathing; and   moving the patient work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second patient work of breathing.   
     
     
         15 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , further comprising:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculating a first total work of breathing;   displaying, on the WOB graphic, a total work of breathing indicator representing the first total work of breathing;   in response to receiving the second data from the one or more sensors, calculating a second total work of breathing; and   moving the total work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second total work of breathing.   
     
     
         16 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 15 , further comprising:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculating a device work of breathing; and   displaying a device work of breathing indicator representing the device work of breathing associated with the first total work of breathing on the WOB graphic.   
     
     
         17 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , wherein the first data is one of pressure or flow of gas delivered to a patient during ventilation by the ventilator. 
     
     
         18 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , further comprising:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculating an elastic work of breathing and a resistive work of breathing; and   displaying an elastic-resistive work of breathing indicator representing the elastic work of breathing and the resistive work of breathing on a WOB scale related to the WOB graphic.   
     
     
         19 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , wherein the numerical indices are displayed in the units of joules per minute (J/min). 
     
     
         20 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , wherein the numerical indices are displayed on at least one of a circular scale, a semicircular scale, or an elliptical scale. 
     
     
         21 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , wherein numerical indices are divided into sectors corresponding to different work of breathing components. 
     
     
         22 . The ventilator-implemented method of  claim 14 , wherein the WOB graphic is displayed on a display screen of the ventilator. 
     
     
         23 . A ventilator system comprising:
 a display screen;   one or more sensors;   a processor; and   a memory for storing and encoding computer executable instructions that, when executed by the processor are operative to:
 display, on the display screen, a work of breathing (WOB) graphic, wherein the WOB graphic is of a constant size and includes numerical indices displayed in units of at least one of: joules (J), joules per liter (J/L), joules per minute (J/min), or joules per minute per kilogram (J/min/kg); 
 in response to receiving first data from the one or more sensors, calculate a first patient work of breathing; 
 display, on the WOB graphic, a patient work of breathing indicator representing the patient work of breathing; 
 in response to receiving second data from the one or more sensors, calculate a second patient work of breathing; and 
 move the patient work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second patient work of breathing. 
   
     
     
         24 . The ventilator system of  claim 23 , wherein the computer executable instructions when executed further cause the ventilator system to:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculate a first total work of breathing;   display on the WOB graphic a total work of breathing indicator representing the first total work of breathing;   in response to receiving the second data from the one or more sensors, calculate a second total work of breathing; and   move the total work of breathing indicator along the numerical indices on the WOB graphic to indicate the second total work of breathing.   
     
     
         25 . The ventilator system of  claim 24 , wherein the computer executable instructions when executed further cause the ventilator system to:
 in response to receiving the first data from the one or more sensors, calculate a device work of breathing; and   display a device work of breathing indicator representing the device work of breathing associated with the first total work of breathing on the WOB graphic.
