Abstract
Compositions, methods of preparing compositions, and methods of treating parasitic nematode infections in wild birds include a fenbendazole premix and a grain formulation. The fenbendazole premix includes fenbendazole, a solvent, a solubilizing agent, and a premix grain carrier. The grain formulation includes a plurality of grains selected from the group consisting of ground corn, soybean meal, whole milo, wheat midds, and rice bran. The fenbendazole premix is integrated within the grain formulation thereby yielding a fenbendazole concentration in the composition of between 80 ppm and 120 ppm. Processes and methods of preparation include mixing the fenbendazole premix and grain formulation in an industrial ribbon mixer, fully integrating the fenbendazole within the grain formulation. Methods of treating include collecting and testing samples, determining a number and location of treatment systems, and charging a feeder with the claimed composition.

1 . A composition comprising:
i. a grain formulation comprising a plurality of grains selected from a group consisting of ground com, soybean meal, whole milo, wheat midds, and rice bran, and ii. a fenbendazole premix comprising:
a) fenbendazole,
b) about 350,000 to 480,000 ppm of a calcium carbonate solubilizing agent,
c) a solvent selected from a group consisting of mineral oil, soybean oil, and peanut oil, wherein the solvent attaches to the solubilizing agent for distributing and stabilizing the fenbendazole throughout the fenbendazole premix, and
d) a premix grain carrier comprising roughage products for facilitating the mixing of the fenbendazole premix within the grain formulation; and
wherein the fenbendazole premix is mixed within the grain formulation to form the composition, and wherein the composition:
a) is in the form of granules;
b) has a fenbendazole concentration of between 80 ppm and 120 ppm;
c) is capable of treating parasitic nematode infections in wild birds; and
d) is capable of retaining fenbendazole stability in a natural habitat for a sufficient period of time for the wild birds to ingest the composition at will in order to treat the parasitic nematode infections in the wild birds.
2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fenbendazole premix comprises about 20,000 ppm fenbendazole.
3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the fenbendazole premix comprises:
one part concentrated premix comprising about 200,000 ppm fenbendazole, and nine parts premix grain carrier comprising roughage products.
4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the granules have a diameter of between about 0.3 mm and about 0.13 mm.
5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the granules have a surface area of between about 0.407 square mm and about 0.30 square mm.
6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the granules have a diameter greater than about 150 microns.
7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the grain formulation includes about 410,000 ppm ground corn, about 310,000 ppm soybean meal, about 100,000 ppm whole milo, about 100,000 ppm wheat midds, and about 62,500 ppm rice bran.
8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the grain formulation includes about 12,500 ppm layer premix comprising a calcium based substrate.
9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the parasitic nematode is Oxyspirura petrowi.
10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the parasitic nematode is Aulonocephalus spp.
11 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the parasitic nematode is Heterakis spp.
12 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the parasitic nematode is Capillaria spp.
13 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the wild birds are members of order Galliformes.
14 . The composition of claim 13 , wherein the wild birds are Colinus virginianus.
15 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the wild birds are members of order Passeriformes.
16 . A product for the treatment of parasitic nematode infections in wild birds comprising:
i. a grain formulation comprising a plurality of grains selected from a group consisting of ground corn, soybean meal, whole milo, wheat midds, and rice bran, and ii. a fenbendazole premix comprising:
a) fenbendazole,
b) about 350,000 to 480,000 ppm of a calcium carbonate solubilizing agent,
c) a solvent selected from a group consisting of mineral oil, soybean oil, and peanut oil, wherein the solvent attaches to the solubilizing agent for distributing and stabilizing the fenbendazole throughout the fenbendazole premix, and
d) a premix grain carrier comprising roughage products for facilitating the mixing of the fenbendazole premix within the grain formulation; and
prepared by a process comprising:
mixing the grain formulation and fenbendazole premix in an industrial ribbon mixer, wherein the mixing fully integrates the fenbendazole within the plurality of grains in the grain formulation, sending the mixture to a pellet mill,
forming pellets from the mixture in a pellet mill,
sending the pellets to a feed pellet cooler,
cooling the pellets in the feed pellet cooler,
sending the pellets to a feed pellet crusher, and
crushing the pellets into granules in the feed pellet crusher,
wherein the product:
a) is in the form of granules;
b) has a fenbendazole concentration of between 80 ppm and 120 ppm;
c) is capable of treating parasitic nematode infections in wild birds; and
d) is capable of retaining fenbendazole stability in a natural habitat for a sufficient period of time for the wild birds to ingest the product at will in order to treat the parasitic nematode infections in the wild birds.
17 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the fenbendazole premix comprises about 20,000 ppm fenbendazole.
18 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the fenbendazole premix comprises:
one part concentrated premix comprising about 200,000 ppm fenbendazole, and nine parts premix grain carrier comprising roughage products.
19 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the process further comprises:
sieving the granules in an industrial grading sieve.
20 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the pellets are about 0.5 cm in diameter.
21 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the pellets are cooled to about 3-5° C. above the pellet mill ambient temperature.
22 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the granules have a diameter of between about 0.3 mm and about 0.13 mm.
23 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the granules have a surface area of between about 0.407 square mm and about 0.30 square mm.
24 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the granules have a diameter greater than about 150 microns.
25 . The product of claim 16 , wherein the product includes about 12,500 ppm layer premix comprising a calcium based substrate.
