Abstract

An example information processing system includes a main unit, a first controller device and a second controller device. The main unit includes a display. The first controller device is configured to be removably attached to the main unit, and the first controller device transmits first operation data representing an operation performed on the first controller device to the main unit, irrespective of whether the first controller device is attached to the main unit. The second controller device is configured to be removably attached to the main unit, and the second controller device transmits second operation data representing an operation performed on the second controller device to the main unit, irrespective of whether the second controller device is attached to the main unit. The main unit displays, on the display, an execution result of an information process based on the first and the second operation data.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . An information processing device comprising:
 a first attachment and detachment mechanism configured to be removably attached to a first controller;   a second attachment and detachment mechanism configured to be removably attached to a second controller; and   a display, wherein:   a result of an information process based on operation data transmitted from the first controller and the second controller is displayed on the display, irrespective of whether the first controller and the second controller are attached to the information processing device,   detachment of the first controller from the first attachment mechanism causes the information processing device to be paired to the first controller for wireless communication, and   detachment of the second controller from the second attachment mechanism causes the information processing device to be paired to the second controller for wireless communication.   
     
     
         2 . An information processing system comprising a main unit and a controller configured to be removably attached to the main unit, wherein:
 the main unit includes a display;   communication between the main unit and the controller when the controller is attached to the main unit uses a first communication scheme, and communication between the main unit and the controller when the controller is detached from the main unit uses a second communication scheme different from the first communication scheme; and   detachment of the controller from the main unit causes the main unit to be paired to the controller for the second communication scheme.   
     
     
         3 . The information processing system according to  claim 2 , wherein the first communication scheme is wired communication. 
     
     
         4 . The information processing system according to  claim 3 , wherein the wired communication between the main unit and the controller is communication through a wired communication channel formed by an electrical connection between a first terminal of the main unit and a second terminal of the controller. 
     
     
         5 . The information processing system according to  claim 4 , wherein when the controller is attached to the main unit, the first terminal of the main unit and the second terminal of the controller are electrically connected to each other via contact. 
     
     
         6 . The information processing system according to  claim 2 , wherein the second communication scheme is wireless communication. 
     
     
         7 . A controller configured to be removably attached to a main unit having a display, the controller comprising:
 a first communication unit for communicating with the main unit using a first communication scheme when the controller is attached to the main unit; and   a second communication unit for communicating with the main unit using a second communication scheme different from the first communication scheme when the controller is detached from the main unit, wherein detachment of the controller from the main unit causes the controller to be paired to the main unit for the second communication scheme.   
     
     
         8 . An information processing device configured to be removably attached to a controller, the information processing device comprising:
 a first communication unit for communicating with the controller using a first communication scheme when the controller is attached to the main unit; and   a second communication unit for communicating with the controller using a second communication scheme different from the first communication scheme the controller is detached from the main unit, wherein   detachment of the controller from the information processing device causes the information processing device to be paired to the controller for the second communication scheme.   
     
     
         9 . A game system comprising a main unit, a first controller and a second controller, wherein:
 the main unit includes a display;   the first controller is configured to be removably attached to the main unit;   the second controller is configured to be removably attached to the main unit;   at least when the first controller and the second controller are detached from the main unit, each of the first controller and the second controller transmits, to the main unit, via wireless communication, operation data representing an operation performed thereon;   detachment of the first controller from the main unit causes the main unit to be paired to the first controller for wireless communication; and   detachment of the second controller from the main unit causes the main unit to be paired to the second controller for wireless communication.
