Abstract

The systems, methods, and devices of the various embodiments enable a receiver device to adjust timing of requests for segments based on the actual times when the segments will be available on the receiver device. In various embodiments, a receiver device may be enabled to modify a segment availability timeline in which the availability times of the segments are adjusted to provide the actual times when segments will be available on the receiver device. In various embodiments, segment availability time adjustments may be made at a service layer of the receiver device. In various embodiments, segment availability time adjustments may be made by a client application on the receiver device. In the various embodiments, a network delay jitter estimate may be provided. In an embodiment, a network delay jitter estimate may be provided in a segment availability timeline.

1 . A method for accommodating data segment availability variability on a receiver device, comprising:
 receiving a segment availability timeline at the receiver device, the received segment availability timeline including an availability time;   determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device, wherein the processing delay is a delay time caused by processing segments by the receiver device for making the segments available to a client application of the receiver device, and wherein the segments are received by the receiver device;   shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device; and   storing the delay adjustment in a memory of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 1 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at the receiver device, the method further comprising:
 storing the modified segment availability timeline in the memory of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 3 , wherein shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at a service layer of the receiver device. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the service layer of the receiver device is a multicast service device client. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) client of the receiver device. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at a client application of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 7 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time outside of the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device to generate a modified segment availability timeline. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the client application is a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) client application. 
     
     
         11 . A method of for accommodating data segment availability variability on a receiver device, comprising:
 receiving a segment availability timeline at the receiver device, the received segment availability timeline including an availability time;   determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device, wherein the processing delay is a delay time caused by processing segments by the receiver device for making the segments available to a client application of the receiver device, wherein the delay adjustment is further based at least in part on a processing delay in making the segments available by the receiver device to a server on the receiver device, and wherein the segments are received by the receiver device;   shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device; and   storing the delay adjustment in a memory of the receiver device.   
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the delay adjustment is further based at least in part on a processing delay in making segments, which are received by the receiver device, available to a server on the receiver device and a receiver device clock drift margin.

         22 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the segment availability timeline includes a network jitter value, and
 wherein determining, at a receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device comprises determining a delay adjustment, at the receiver device, based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device and the included network jitter value.

The method of  claim 1 , wherein determining, at a receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device comprises determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device and a network jitter value stored in a memory of the receiver device. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising receiving a network jitter value at the receiver device,
 wherein determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device comprises determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device and the received network jitter value.   
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein receiving a network jitter value at the receiver device comprises receiving a network jitter value at the receiver device in a User Service Description. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 calculating, at the receiver device, a network jitter value,   wherein determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device comprises determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device and the calculated network jitter value.   
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the received segment availability timeline is a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) Media Presentation Description (MPD). 
     
     
         28 . A receiver device, comprising:
 a memory; and   a processor coupled to the memory and configured with processor-executable instructions to:   receive a segment availability timeline, the received segment availability timeline including an availability time;   determine a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device, wherein the processing delay is a delay time caused by processing segments by the receiver device for making the segments available to a client application of the receiver device, and wherein the segments are received by the receiver device;   shift the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device; and   store the delay adjustment in the memory of the receiver device.   
     
     
         29 . A non-transitory processor-readable medium configured with processor-executable instructions to cause a processor of a receiver device to perform the operations comprising:
 receiving a segment availability timeline at the receiver device, the received segment availability timeline including an availability time;   determining, at the receiver device, a delay adjustment based at least in part on a processing delay of the receiver device, wherein the processing delay is a delay time caused by processing segments by the receiver device for making the segments available to a client application of the receiver device, and wherein the segments are received by the receiver device;   shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device; and   storing the delay adjustment in a memory of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 37 , wherein shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment to generate a modified segment availability timeline at a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) client of the receiver device. 
     
     
         39 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at a client application of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 39 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time outside of the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device.

The method of  claim 39 , wherein shifting the availability time by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device comprises shifting the availability time within the segment availability timeline by the delay adjustment at the client application of the receiver device to generate a modified segment availability timeline. 
     
     
         42 . The method of  claim 39 , wherein the client application is a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) client application. 
     
     
         43 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the received segment availability timeline is received in a first Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) Media Presentation Description (MPD);
 wherein the server that is on the receiver device is a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server that is on the receiver device;   wherein the client application of the receiver device is a Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) client application of the receiver device;   wherein storing the delay adjustment in a memory of the receiver device comprises:
 storing, in a memory of the receiver device, a modified Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (DASH) Media Presentation Description (MPD) that includes the shifted availability time, the DASH client application of the receiver device configured to use the modified DASH MPD to request segments from the local HTTP server on the receiver device.
