Abstract

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for cloud memory sizing are disclosed. An initial database memory allocation is determined for the provisioning of a database server instance. Periodically, sizes of key database tables of the database server instance are measured and an upper and a lower bound ratio are determined based on the key database table sizes and a buffer pool size. The upper and lower bound ratios are used to determine a desired memory allocation from which a report is generated including an interface for generating an instance move action for re-provisioning the database server instance with the desired memory allocation.

         21 . A device, comprising:
 a processor; and   a memory, accessible by the processor, the memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:
 determining an initial resource allocation for a database server instance to be provisioned in a cloud computing infrastructure; 
 provisioning the database server instance on a server in the cloud computing infrastructure with the initial resource allocation; 
 determining, after provisioning the database server instance with the initial resource allocation, that a current usage of memory resources of the database server instance is less than a total amount of memory resources associated with the database server instance; 
 determining a current resource pool size from the total amount of memory resources associated with the database server instance; 
 determining a suggested memory allocation for the database server instance based at least in part on the current usage of memory resources and the current resource pool size; and 
 re-provisioning the database server instance with the suggested memory allocation. 
   
     
     
         22 . The device of  claim 21 , wherein the memory and the processor are configured to provide a management server in the cloud computing infrastructure communicatively coupled to the server. 
     
     
         23 . The device of  claim 22 , the operations comprising re-provisioning memory of an additional server in the cloud computing infrastructure based at least in part on the suggested memory allocation and the current resource pool size. 
     
     
         24 . The device of  claim 21 , the operations comparing a lower bound of the current usage of memory resources and an upper bound of the current usage of memory resources against a lookup table of ratios and memory allocations. 
     
     
         25 . The device of  claim 24 , wherein the upper bound of the current usage of memory resources and the lower bound of the current usage of memory resources are defined by a ratio of the current usage of memory resources to the current resource pool size. 
     
     
         26 . The device of  claim 21 , wherein the database server instance is over sized when the current usage of memory resources is less than the total amount of memory resources associated with the database server instance by a threshold amount, and wherein a period of time in which the database server instance has been over sized is used to determine a priority for the re-provisioning. 
     
     
         27 . The device of  claim 26 , wherein the period of time in which the database server instance has been over sized oversized or under sized is determined relative to a dynamic threshold. 
     
     
         28 . A method, comprising:
 determining, by a processor, a current memory usage of a database server instance;   determining, by the processor, a suggested memory allocation for the database server instance after determining the current memory usage of the database server instance, wherein the suggested memory allocation is determined relative to a subset of memory resources of a pool of memory resources allocated to the database server instance;   re-provisioning, by the processor, memory resources allocated to the database server instance using the suggested memory allocation.   
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 28 , wherein determining, by the processor, the current memory usage of the database server instance comprises determining an amount of memory resources used by a buffer pool, a key cache, a query cache, data structures of the database server instance, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising periodically repeating, by the processor, determining the current memory usage on an hourly basis, a daily basis, a weekly basis, or any combination thereof. 
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising determining, by the processor, the current memory usage comprises determining, by the processor, a plurality of database tables that are accessed most often relative to a total number of database tables. 
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising determining, by the processor, the suggested memory allocation at least in part by determining, by the processor, a ratio comparing a total size of the current memory usage to the pool of memory resources allocated to the database server instance. 
     
     
         33 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising generating, by the processor, a report indicating whether the database server instance is under sized or oversized relative to the current memory usage. 
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising automatically applying, by the processor, the suggested memory allocation to re-provision the database server instance when the suggested memory allocation is different from the current memory usage. 
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising applying, by the processor, the suggested memory allocation at least in part by moving information stored in the database server instance to a new database server instance having a size equal to the suggested memory allocation. 
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 28 , comprising applying, by the processor, the suggested memory allocation at least in part by adjusting the current memory usage of the database server instance. 
     
     
         37 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising computer-readable instructions configured to cause a computing device to perform operations comprising:
 determining a current memory usage of a database server instance;   determining, after determining the current memory usage of the database server instance, that a suggested memory allocation for the database server instance, wherein the suggested memory allocation is determined relative to a subset of memory resources of a pool of memory resources allocated to the database server instance; and   re-provisioning the subset of memory resources allocated to the database server instance using the suggested memory allocation.   
     
     
         38 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 37 , wherein the current memory usage is determined based at least in part on determining a set of key database tables of the database server instance 
     
     
         39 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 38 , the operations comprising:
 generating a report indicating the current memory usage and the suggested memory allocation for the database server instance; and   generating a user interface configured to trigger an instance move action to re-provision the database server instance with the suggested memory allocation in response to selection of a portion of the user interface.   
     
     
         40 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of  claim 37 , wherein re-provisioning the subset of memory resources allocated to the database server instance using the suggested memory allocation comprises:
 determining an amount of memory available for re-provisioning of the computing device;   determining a difference between the amount of memory available for re-provisioning and the suggested memory allocation; and   re-provisioning the subset of memory resources allocated to the database server instance using the difference between the amount of memory available for re-provisioning and the suggested memory allocation.
