Abstract

The present disclosure relates to wheat plants having grain with high β-glucan content, methods for constructing said wheat plants, grain therefrom and uses thereof. Wheat lines homozygous for the HvCslF6 gene from barley having five times the fiber content and an increased β-glucan content of TA5790, TA5792, and TA5795 are disclosed.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A wheat plant having grain with high β-glucan content, or a part thereof, said wheat plant comprising a 7HL chromosomal fragment comprising a HvCslF6 gene from Barley, wherein said plant is positive for the marker AK353650.

22 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said Barley is from the variety Betzes.

         23 . (canceled)

24 . A wheat plant having grain with high β-glucan content, or a part thereof, said wheat plant comprising a 7HL chromosomal fragment comprising a HvCslF6 gene from Barley, wherein said HvCslF6 gene is operably linked to its native Barley promoter.

25 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said wheat plant includes 10% or less of the barley 7HL chromosome.

26 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said wheat plant includes 5% or less of the barley 7HL chromosome.

27 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said wheat plant contains 0.5% of less of barley chromatin.

28 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said wheat plant contains 0.2% or less of total barley chromatin.

29 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein the HvCslF6 gene is the only remaining barley originated chromatin.

30 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said plant is heterozygous for said HvCslF6 gene in at least one of wheat genomes A, B, or D.

31 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said plant is homozygous for said HvCslF6 gene in at least one of wheat genomes A, B, or D.

32 . The wheat plant of claim 21 wherein said wheat plant is non-transgenic.

33 . A method of producing a wheat plant with a high β-glucan content comprising:
 a) crossing a wheat plant with pollen from a barley plant to produce a progeny plant;
 b) growing seed from said progeny plant which has a 7H translocation to produce a further progeny plant,
 c) crossing said further progeny plant with itself or a second wheat plant repeating steps b and c until said plant is stable for the high β glucan trait.

         34 - 35 . (canceled)

36 . A wheat plant produced by the method of claim 33 .

         37 . (canceled)

38 . The wheat plant of claim 36 wherein said 7H chromosomal arm is from Betzes.

39 . The wheat plant of claim 38 wherein said portion is one or more nucleotide bases.

40 . The wheat plant of claim 36 wherein said wheat plant is from wheat lines TA5790, TA5792, and TA5795, representative seed of such line having been deposited with the American Type Culture collection and having been assigned ATCC Patent Deposit Designations PTA-124874, PTA-124875, and PTA-124876, respectively.

         41 - 42 . (canceled)
