Abstract

Provided are isolated polynucleotides which are at least 80% homologous to SEQ ID NO: 320, 1-319, 321-473, 836-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177; and isolated polypeptides which are at least 80% homologous to SEQ ID NO: 760, 474-759, 761-770, 772-835 and 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 or 7130, nucleic acid constructs comprising the isolated polynucleotides, transgenic plants expressing same and methods of using same for increasing abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency of a plant.

What is claimed is: 
     
         1 . A method of increasing abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency of a plant, comprising over-expressing within the plant a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 80% identical to SEQ ID NO: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 or 7130 as compared to a native plant of the same species which is grown under the same growth conditions, thereby increasing the abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency of the plant.

The method of  claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide exhibits at least 90% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 and 7130. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide exhibits at least 95% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 and 7130.

The method of  claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 and 7130.

The method of  claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is encoded by a polynucleotide comprising the nucleic acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 320, 1-18, 20-38, 40-292, 294-310, 312-319, 321-473, 836-1197, 1202-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177, or a codon optimized nucleic acid sequence for expression of said SEQ ID NOs: 320, 1-18, 20-38, 40-292, 294-310, 312-319, 321-473, 836-1197, 1202-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said polypeptide is over-expressed by introducing into the plant a heterologous polynucleotide encoding said polypeptide. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising selecting said plant over-expressing said polypeptide for increased abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency as compared to a native plant of the same species which is grown under the same growth conditions. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising growing the plant expressing said exogenous polynucleotide under the abiotic stress. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said abiotic stress is selected from the group consisting of salinity, drought, water deprivation, flood, etiolation, low temperature, high temperature, heavy metal toxicity, anaerobiosis, nutrient deficiency, nutrient excess, atmospheric pollution and UV irradiation. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the yield comprises seed yield or oil yield. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising growing the plant expressing said exogenous polynucleotide under nitrogen-limiting conditions. 
     
     
         12 . A nucleic acid construct comprising an isolated polynucleotide comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide which comprises an amino acid sequence at least 80% identical to the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 or 7130 and a promoter for directing transcription of said nucleic acid sequence in a host cell, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said isolated polynucleotide, and wherein said amino acid sequence is capable of increasing abiotic stress tolerance, yield, biomass, growth rate, vigor, oil content, fiber yield, fiber quality, and/or nitrogen use efficiency of a plant. 
     
     
         13 . The nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 , wherein said amino acid sequence is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 760, 474-491, 493-511, 513-759, 761-770, 772-835, 4178-4195, 4197-4213, 4215-4216, 4218-4501, 4506-5334, 5336-5522, 5524-5754, 5756-6215, 6217, 6220-6223, 6230, 6232, 6235-6607, 6609-6614, 6620-7129 and 7130.

The nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 , wherein said nucleic acid sequence is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 320, 1-18, 20-38, 40-292, 294-310, 312-319, 321-473, 836-1197, 1202-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177, or a codon optimized nucleic acid sequence for expression of said SEQ ID NOs: 320, 1-18, 20-38, 40-292, 294-310, 312-319, 321-473, 836-1197, 1202-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177. 
     
     
         15 . The nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 , wherein said nucleic acid sequence is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 320, 1-18, 20-38, 40-292, 294-310, 312-319, 321-473, 836-1197, 1202-1652, 1654-3221, 3225-3241, 3243-3630, 3632-4176 or 4177. 
     
     
         16 . The nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 , wherein said promoter is a constitutive promoter. 
     
     
         17 . The nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 , wherein said promoter is a tissue-specific, or an abiotic stress-inducible promoter. 
     
     
         18 . A plant cell transformed with the nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 . 
     
     
         19 . The plant cell of  claim 16 , wherein said plant cell forms part of a plant. 
     
     
         20 . A transgenic plant comprising the nucleic acid construct of  claim 12 .
