Dynamic Communication Participant Identification

Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving an identifier for a first user initiating a communication between a first device associated with the first user and a second device associated with a second user, retrieving, using the identifier, a privacy rule associated with the first user, determining, based on the privacy rule and social-networking information associated with the first user, whether one or more items of information associated with the first user are allowed to be revealed to the second user, and sending, to the second device, any of the items of information associated with the first user that are allowed to be revealed to the second user for display in association with the communication between the first device and the second device.

         21 . A method comprising:
 by one or more processors, receiving an identifier for a first user initiating a communication between a first device associated with the first user and a second device associated with a second user;   by the processors, determining a context of the communication session based on social-networking information for the first and second users;   by the processors, determining, based on the social-networking information, a set of information related to the determined context about the first user for display to the second user that describes the first user in the context of the communication session;   by the processors, formatting the set of information for display in a caller ID interface; and   by the processors, sending, to the second device, the one or more items of information for display by the second device while the second device is notifying the second user about the communication to enable the second user to recognize the first user in the determined context.   
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein determining the context comprises selecting between a business context, a recreational context, a family context, and a close proximity context. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the determined context is the business context, and the set of information about the first user comprises an employer, a job title, and an office location. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the determined context is the family context, and the set of information about the first user comprises a familial relationship to the second user. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the determined context is the recreational context, and the set of information about the first user comprises information regarding an affiliation with a recreational organization that both the first and second users are affiliated with. 
     
     
         26 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the determined context is the close proximity context, and the set of information about the first user comprises a location estimate for the first user. 
     
     
         27 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the communication comprises a telephone call, and wherein the set of information for with the first user is sent as caller identification information to the second device by a telephone switch. 
     
     
         28 . The method of  claim 21 , further comprising:
 in response to receiving, from the second user, a request for information associated with the first user, sending, to the second device, at least one item of information from the set of information for the first user.   
     
     
         29 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the communication comprises a telephone call, and the identifier comprises a telephone number of the first user. 
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 21 , wherein the communication comprises an email message, and the identifier comprises an email address of the second user. 
     
     
         31 . One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software that is operable when executed to:
 receive an identifier for a first user initiating a communication between a first device associated with the first user and a second device associated with a second user;   determine a context of the communication session based on social-networking information for the first and second users;   determine based on the social-networking information, a set of information related to the determined context about the first user for display to the second user that describes the first user in the context of the communication session;   format the set of information for display in a caller ID interface; and   send, to the second device, the one or more items of information for display by the second device while the second device is notifying the second user about the communication to enable the second user to recognize the first user in the determined context.   
     
     
         32 . The media of  claim 31 , wherein determining the context comprises selecting between a business context, a recreational context, a family context, and a close proximity context. 
     
     
         33 . The media of  claim 32 , wherein the determined context is the business context, and the set of information about the first user comprises an employer, a job title, and an office location.

         38 . The media of  claim 31 , wherein the software is further operable when executed to:
 in response to receiving, from the second user, a request for information associated with the first user, send, to the second device, at least one item of information from the set of information for the first user.   
     
     
         39 . The media of  claim 31 , wherein the communication comprises a telephone call, and the identifier comprises a telephone number of the first user. 
     
     
         40 . A system comprising: one or more processors; and a non-transitory memory coupled to the processors comprising instructions executable by the processors, the processors operable when executing the instructions to:
 receive an identifier for a first user initiating a communication between a first device associated with the first user and a second device associated with a second user;   determine a context of the communication session based on social-networking information for the first and second users;   determine based on the social-networking information, a set of information related to the determined context about the first user for display to the second user that describes the first user in the context of the communication session;   format the set of information for display in a caller ID interface; and   send, to the second device, the one or more items of information for display by the second device while the second device is notifying the second user about the communication to enable the second user to recognize the first user in the determined context.
