Abstract
A spinal construct includes a body having a wall disposed between a first cavity and a second cavity. The second cavity being configured for disposal of an existing spinal implant. A rod is disposed with the first cavity and connectable with tissue. The rod is rotatable relative to the body. Systems, surgical instruments, implants and methods are disclosed.

21 . A spinal construct comprising:
a body including a cavity, a passageway, and first and second openings, the first opening being in communication with the cavity, the second opening being in communication with the passageway; and a rod including a head sized and shaped to fit within the cavity such that the head defines a joint with the cavity allowing multi-axial movement of the rod relative to the body.
22 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein the joint is a spheroidal joint.
23 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , further comprising a coupling member connectable with the body to lock the rod into a selected position, wherein the joint is configured to allow the rod to rotate relative to the body when the rod is not locked into the selected position by the coupling member.
24 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein at least the first opening has a circular cross-sectional configuration.
25 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein the body includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion including the cavity and the first opening, the second portion including the passageway and the second opening, the first portion having a maximum height equal generally to a maximum height of the second portion.
26 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein the body includes a first portion and a second portion, the first portion including the cavity and the first opening, the second portion including spaced first and second extensions extending from the first portion, the first and second extensions defining the passageway.
27 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein the body includes opposite top and bottom surfaces, the openings each extending through the top surface.
28 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , wherein the body includes opposite top and bottom surfaces and opposite first and second side walls each extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, the body including opposite first and second end walls each extending from the first side wall to the second side wall, the openings each extending through the top surface, the passageway extending through the first and second side walls and the second end wall.
29 . The spinal construct recited in claim 28 , wherein the body includes a circular aperture extending through the first side wall, the circular aperture being sized and shaped to receive the head of the rod to allow the head to enter the cavity.
30 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , further comprising a first aperture in communication with the cavity and a second aperture in communication with the passageway, the first aperture being sized and shaped to receive the head of the rod, the rod comprising a first shaft and a second shaft, the first shaft being coaxial with the first aperture when the rod is in a selected orientation relative to the body, the second shaft being coaxial with the second aperture when the rod is in the selected orientation relative to the body, the head being coupled to the first shaft.
31 . The spinal construct recited in claim 21 , further comprising a coupling member including opposite first and second end surfaces, the first end surface being sized and shaped to be received in the cavity, the second end surface having a maximum diameter greater than a maximum diameter of the first end surface.
32 . The spinal construct recited in claim 31 , wherein the first end surface is concavely curved.
33 . A spinal construct comprising:
a body a cavity, a passageway, a first inner surface defining a first opening and a second inner surface defining a second opening, the first opening being spaced apart from the second opening, the first and second openings each being in communication with the first cavity, the first surface defining a groove; a ring disposed in the groove; and a rod including a head sized and shaped to fit within the cavity such that the head defines a joint with the cavity allowing multi-axial movement of the rod relative to the body, the rod being configured to apply a force to the ring to move the ring between a contracted orientation and an expanded orientation.
34 . The spinal construct recited in claim 33 wherein the ring is biased to the contracted orientation.
35 . The spinal construct recited in claim 33 wherein the ring facilitates engagement of the rod with the body.
36 . The spinal construct recited in claim 33 wherein the first cavity is spaced apart from the second cavity by a wall, the wall including a female thread form.
37 . A method for treating a spine, the method comprising:
creating a surgical pathway to access an existing spinal construct, the existing spinal construct including implanted bone screws and an implanted spinal rod; disposing the implanted spinal rod within a passageway of a connector; positioning a revision rod within a cavity of the connector; pivoting the revision rod relative to the connector to position the revision rod at a selected orientation relative to the body such that the revision rod is aligned with the implanted spinal rod; and rotating a coupling member relative to the connector such that the coupling member directly engages the revision rod within the cavity to fix the revision rod at the selected orientation relative to the body.
38 . The method recited in claim 37 , wherein:
the revision rod includes a first shaft defining a first axis and a second shaft defining a second axis, the first shaft being positioned within the cavity, the second shaft being connected to the first shaft by a transition portion such that first axis is offset from the second axis; the implanted spinal rod defines a third axis; and the second axis is coaxial with the third axis when the revision rod is in the selected orientation relative to the body.
39 . The method recited in claim 38 , further comprising inserting the revision rod through a circular opening of the connector to position the revision rod within the cavity, the circular opening defining a fourth axis, the fourth axis being coaxial with the first axis when the revision rod is in the selected orientation relative to the body.
40 . The method recited in claim 37 , wherein disposing the implanted spinal rod within the passageway of the connector includes capturing the implanted spinal rod within the passageway from a side loading orientation.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
