Abstract

An interspinous implant is provided. The interspinous implant can include a first member having a first end and a second end. At least one of the first end and the second end can include a mating portion. The interspinous implant can also include a second member, which can have a first end, a second end and at least one receiving portion formed adjacent to at least one of the first end and the second end. The at least one receiving portion can receive the mating portion to couple the first member to the second member at a desired orientation. The interspinous implant can also include a first extension, which can be substantially opposite the mating portion, and adapted to engage a spinous process. The interspinous implant can comprise a second extension, which can be substantially opposite the at least one receiving portion, and adapted to engage a second process.

         21 . An interspinous implant including a longitudinal superior-inferior axis, the interspinous implant comprising:
 a body including a medial-lateral width and an anterior-posterior depth, the body including an anterior portion and a posterior portion;   a first body aperture extending through the body across the medial-lateral width;   a first extension extending from the body in a superior direction defining a first extension axis parallel to the longitudinal axis, the first extension comprising a first pair of opposing arms that define a first channel, the first pair of arms adapted to engage a first spinous process; and   a second extension extending from the body in an inferior direction defining a second extension axis parallel to and offset from the first extension axis, the second extension comprising a second pair of opposing arms that define a second channel, the second channel configured to receive a second spinous process;   wherein the first and second channels extend parallel to each other and generally perpendicular to the longitudinal superior-interior axis.   
     
     
         22 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the body is C-shaped. 
     
     
         23 . The interspinous implant of  claim 22 , wherein the first body aperture is C-shaped. 
     
     
         24 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the body is generally oval shaped. 
     
     
         25 . The interspinous implant of  claim 24 , wherein the anterior portion of the body extends anteriorly in reference to the first extension and is configured to extend into a vertebral foramen. 
     
     
         26 . The interspinous implant of  claim 24 , wherein the first body aperture is generally oval shaped. 
     
     
         27 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the first body aperture is configured to allow the body to be elastically deformable. 
     
     
         28 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the anterior portion and the posterior portion of the body have a superior-inferior height that changes between the anterior portion and the posterior portion. 
     
     
         29 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the body further includes a second body aperture, the second body aperture extending through the body along a transverse axis extending transversely to the longitudinal superior-inferior axis. 
     
     
         30 . The interspinous implant of  claim 29 , wherein the second body aperture is generally oval-shaped. 
     
     
         31 . The interspinous implant of  claim 29 , wherein the second body aperture is configured to allow the body to function as a tension swing to reduce loads on the body in a disc space between two vertebrae. 
     
     
         32 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the first extension is coupled to the anterior portion of the body 
     
     
         33 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the second extension is coupled to the posterior portion of the body. 
     
     
         34 . The interspinous implant of  claim 21 , wherein the implant is coated with a polymeric material. 
     
     
         35 . An interspinous implant including a latitudinal axis and a longitudinal superior-inferior axis, the interspinous implant comprising:
 a C-shaped body extending along the latitudinal axis and including a medial-lateral width and an anterior-posterior depth, the body including an anterior portion and a posterior portion;   a first body aperture extending within the body across the medial-lateral width;   a first U-shaped extension comprising a first pair of arms coupled to the anterior portion of the body extending in a superior direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, the first pair of arms defining a first channel;   a second U-shaped extension comprising a second pair of arms coupled to the posterior portion of the body extending in an inferior direction parallel to the longitudinal axis, the second pair of arms defining a second channel;   wherein the first and second channels are U-shaped in a coronal plane; and   wherein the first and second channels extend generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, each channel configured to engage a spinous process.   
     
     
         36 . The interspinous implant of  claim 35 , wherein the C-shaped body comprises:
 an inner C-shaped body portion;   an outer C-shaped body portion;   wherein the inner C shaped-body portion and the outer C-shaped body portion are connected by a first curved end portion and a second curved end portion.   
     
     
         37 . The interspinous implant of  claim 35 , wherein the anterior portion and the posterior portion of the C-shaped body have a superior-inferior height that changes between the anterior portion and the posterior portion. 
     
     
         38 . The interspinous implant of  claim 35 , wherein the C-shaped body and the first body aperture cooperate to allow the C-shaped body to be elastically deformable. 
     
     
         39 . The interspinous implant of  claim 35 , further including a second body aperture, the second body aperture extending through the C-shaped body along a transverse axis extending transversely to the longitudinal superior-inferior axis. 
     
     
         40 . The interspinous implant of  claim 39 , wherein the second body aperture is configured to allow the C-shaped body to function as a tension spring to reduce loads on the body in a disc space between two vertebrae. 
     
     
         41 . The interspinous implant of  claim 35 , wherein the C-shaped body includes anti-slip formations configured to engage bone.
