Abstract

This present invention is directed to a method to remediate soil. Embodiments of the present invention can be conducted ex-situ within the footprint of the area to be remediated. The method utilizes hydrogen peroxide.

1 . A method to remediate at least one contaminant in soil, comprising:
 providing an oxidant to the soil in a treatment area, wherein no additive is combined with the oxidant; and   excavating the treatment area in place to mix the soil in the treatment area with the oxidant to produce remediated soil.   
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising at least one additional remediation cycle, wherein the at least one additional remediation cycle comprises:
 measuring an amount of the at least one contaminant in the remediated soil;   providing an additional amount of the oxidant to the remediated soil;   mixing the additional amount of the oxidant and the remediated soil in the treatment area to produce further remediated soil.   
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , further comprising repeating the at least one additional remediation cycle until the level of the at least one contaminant in the remediated soil is below a regulation limit. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the at least one additional remediation cycle is repeated until all contamination levels of the at least one contamination in the remediated soil is below a regulation limit. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising measuring an amount of the at least one contaminant in a base of the treatment area, or at least one sidewall of the treatment area. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , further comprising increasing an area of the treatment area if the amount of the at least one contaminant in the at least one side wall of the treatment area or the at least one base of the treatment area is greater than the regulation limit. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the oxidant to soil is between about lb oxidant:49 lbs soil and about 1 lb oxidant:105 lbs soil. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a temperature during mixing is between about 0° F. and about 140° F. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a contact time between the oxidant and the soil is between about 48 hours and about 72 hours. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein a contact time between the additional amount of the oxidant and the soil is between about 48 hours and about 72 hours. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising backfilling the treatment area with the remediated soil. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising pre-analyzing an amount of the at least one contaminant in the soil of the treatment area. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising determining feasibility of the method for the treatment area. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the soil is at least one of silty fine grain sand, weathered sandstone, fractured bedrock sandstone, claystone, fine grain sand, silty sand, silt, or clay. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a concentration of the oxidant is between about 17.5% and about 34%. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the oxidant comprises hydrogen peroxide. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the oxidant consists of hydrogen peroxide.
