Abstract
A computer-implemented user interface method includes displaying on a mobile device desktop a background image and one or more foreground items over the background image, receiving a user input to pan across the desktop, and panning the background images and one or more foreground images in a parallax manner relative to each other.

21 . A method comprising:
displaying, by a touch screen display of a computing device, a graphical user interface including a plurality of screen spaces, wherein:
a first screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is visible on the display at a given time,
a second screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is not visible at the given time, and
the first screen space and the second screen space are non-overlapping screen spaces;
receiving, by the computing device, an indication of a user input to reposition a first user interface element visible on the display onto a location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given time, and (ii) is occupied by a second user interface element, wherein the user input is a touch user input initially detected by the touch screen display at an initial location of the touch screen display at which the first user interface element was displayed when the user input was initially detected; responsive to receiving the indication of the user input to reposition the first user interface element:
repositioning the first user interface element onto the location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given point in time, and (ii) is occupied by the second user interface element; and
repositioning the second user interface element from the location on the first screen space onto a location on the second screen space.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the user input to reposition the first user interface element comprises a user input to re-size the first user interface element to occupy a larger portion of the first screen space that includes the location of the first screen space.
23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the graphical user interface is a multi-layered graphical user interface.
24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the multi-layered graphical user interface comprises a wallpaper image that is on a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that is different than a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that includes the first user interface element and second user interface element.
25 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the graphical user interface includes a wallpaper image, the method further comprising:
receiving, by the computing device, an indication of a user input to pan a desktop of the graphical user interface from the first screen space to the second screen space; and panning, by the computing device and based on the user input to pan the desktop, the graphical user interface from the first screen space to the second screen space, wherein the panning includes panning the wallpaper image at a rate that is different than the panning of user interfaces elements of the first screen space and user interface elements of the second screen space during the panning of the first screen space to the second screen space.
26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the panning of the wallpaper image at the rate that is different than the panning of the user interfaces elements of the first screen space and the user interface elements of the second screen space during the panning of the first screen space to the second screen space comprises panning the wallpaper image a fewer number of pixels than the panning of the user interface elements of the first screen space and the user interface elements of the second screen space.
27 . The method of claim 21 , wherein repositioning the first user interface element onto the location on the first screen space comprises:
providing, by the computing device and during the repositioning, tactile feedback as the first user interface element is moved across each location in a grid of the graphical user interface.
28 . A device comprising:
a touch screen display configured to display a graphical user interface that includes a plurality of screen spaces, wherein a first screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is visible on a display at a given time, wherein a second screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is not visible at the given time, and wherein the first screen space and the second screen space are non-overlapping screen spaces; one or more processors; and a non-transitory computer-readable medium configured to store instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
receive an indication of a user input to reposition a first user interface element visible on the display onto a location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given time, and (ii) is occupied by a second user interface element, wherein the user input is a touch user input initially detected by the touch screen display at an initial location of the touch screen display at which the first user interface element was displayed when the user input was initially detected;
responsive to receiving the indication of the user input to reposition the first user interface element:
reposition the first user interface element onto the location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given time, and (ii) is occupied by the second user interface element; and
reposition the second user interface element from the location on the first screen space onto a location on the second screen space.
29 . The device of claim 28 , wherein the user input to reposition the first user interface element comprises a user input to re-size the first user interface element to occupy a larger portion of a desktop that includes the location of the first screen space.
30 . The device of claim 28 , wherein the graphical user interface is a multi-layered graphical user interface.
31 . The device of claim 30 , wherein the multi-layered graphical user interface comprises a wallpaper image that is on a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that is different than a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that includes the first user interface element and the second user interface element.
32 . The device of claim 28 , wherein the graphical user interface includes a wallpaper image, and wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:
receive an indication of a user input to pan a desktop from the first screen space to the second screen space; and pan, based on the user input to pan the desktop, the graphical user interface from the first screen space to the second screen space, wherein the panning includes panning the wallpaper image at a rate that is different than the panning of user interfaces elements of the first screen space and user interface elements of the second screen space during the panning of the first screen space to the second screen space.
33 . The device of claim 32 , wherein the panning of the wallpaper image at a rate that is different than the panning of the user interfaces elements of the first screen space and the user interface elements of the second screen space during the panning of the first screen space to the second screen space comprises panning the wallpaper image a fewer number of pixels than the panning of the user interface elements of the first screen space and the user interface elements of the second screen space.
34 . The device of claim 28 ,
wherein the touch screen display is configured to provide, during the touch input, tactile feedback as the first user interface element is moved across each location in a grid of the graphical user interface.

41 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more processors which, upon such execution, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
providing, for display by a touch screen display, a graphical user interface including a plurality of screen spaces, wherein:
a first screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is visible on the display at a given time,
a second screen space of the plurality of screen spaces is not visible at the given time, and
the first screen space and the second screen space are non-overlapping screen spaces;
receiving an indication of a user input to reposition a first user interface element visible on the display onto a location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given time, and (ii) is occupied by a second user interface element, wherein the user input is a touch user input initially detected by the touch screen display at an initial location of the touch screen display at which the first user interface element was displayed when the user input was initially detected; responsive to receiving the indication of the user input to reposition the first user interface element:
repositioning the first user interface element onto the location on the first screen space that (i) is visible on the display at the given point in time, and (ii) is occupied by the second user interface element; and
repositioning the second user interface element from the location on the first screen space onto a location on the second screen space.
42 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 41 , wherein the user input to reposition the first user interface element comprises a user input to re-size the first user interface element to occupy a larger portion of the first screen space that includes the location of the first screen space.
43 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 41 , wherein the graphical user interface is a multi-layered graphical user interface that comprises a wallpaper image that is on a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that is different than a layer of the multi-layered graphical user interface that includes the first user interface element and second user interface element.
44 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 41 , wherein the graphical user interface includes a wallpaper image, the operations further comprising:
receiving an indication of a user input to pan a desktop of the graphical user interface from the first screen space to the second screen space; and panning, based on the user input to pan the desktop, the graphical user interface from the first screen space to the second screen space, wherein the panning includes panning the wallpaper image at a rate that is different than the panning of user interfaces elements of the first screen space and user interface elements of the second screen space during the panning of the first screen space to the second screen space.
