Multi-word autocorrection
Abstract
Methods and systems of multi-word automatic correction (“autocorrect”) are provided. Autocorrect generally can select a corrected word based on a typed word and a dictionary of correctly-spelled words. Multi-word autocorrect can add to this functionality by revisiting the selection of an initial corrected word if a subsequently-typed word indicates that it would be more appropriate to instead select an additional corrected word. In some cases, an autocorrect system can make a multi-word correction based on a multi-word phrase in a dictionary, such as replacing “new york” with “New York” as described above. In other cases, an autocorrect system can make a multi-word correction to correct a mistakenly-typed delimiter character. In other cases, an autocorrect system can use grammar rules to obtain additional context information with each subsequently-typed word and make multi-word corrections on that basis.

21 . A method comprising:
at an electronic device including a display and one or more input devices:
receiving a first input, the first input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a first word via the one or more input devices;
in response to receiving the first input:
displaying the first word on the display;
selecting a first corrected word different than the first word; and
replacing the first word on the display with the first corrected word;
maintaining information of the first input corresponding to the first word after replacing the first word with the first corrected word;
receiving a second input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a second word via the one or more input devices; and
in response to receiving the second input:
displaying the first corrected word and the second word on the display; and
selecting a second corrected word based on the information of the first input and based on the second input; and
replacing at least one of the first corrected word and the second word on the display with the second corrected word.
22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the display and one or more input devices comprise a touch screen.
23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the first input includes one or more first touch points on a touch-sensitive keyboard displayed on the touch screen and the second input includes one or more second touch points on the touch-sensitive keyboard.
24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the information of the first input corresponding to the first word includes the one or more first touch points.
25 . The method of claim 23 , wherein each of the one or more characters of the first word is determined based on location data of a respective one of the one or more first touch points.
26 . The method of claim 23 , wherein each of the one or more characters of the first word is determined based on a probability distribution over keys of the touch-sensitive keyboard proximate to a location of a respective one of the one or more first touch point.
27 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:
creating a set of candidate corrected words; and scoring each of the candidate corrected words; wherein the second corrected word is selected from the set of candidate corrected words in accordance with the scoring.
28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the scoring is based on a grammar rule.
29 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the scoring is based on the one or more first touch points and the one or more second touch points.
30 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising:
in response to receiving the second input:
selecting a third corrected word based on the information of the first input and based on the second input; and
replacing the first corrected word and the second word on the display with the second corrected work and the third corrected word.
31 . An electronic device comprising:
a display; one or more input devices; one or more processors; memory; and one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:
receiving a first input, the first input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a first word via the one or more input devices;
in response to receiving the first input:
displaying the first word on the display;
selecting a first corrected word different than the first word; and
replacing the first word on the display with the first corrected word;
maintaining information of the first input corresponding to the first word after replacing the first word with the first corrected word;
receiving a second input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a second word via the one or more input devices; and
in response to receiving the second input:
displaying the first corrected word and the second word on the display; and
selecting a second corrected word based on the information of the first input and based on the second input; and
replacing at least one of the first corrected word and the second word on the display with the second corrected word.
32 . The device of claim 31 , wherein the display and one or more input devices comprise a touch screen.
33 . The device of claim 32 , wherein the first input includes one or more first touch points on a touch-sensitive keyboard displayed on the touch screen and the second input includes one or more second touch points on the touch-sensitive keyboard.
34 . The device of claim 33 , wherein the information of the first input corresponding to the first word includes the one or more first touch points.
35 . The device of claim 33 , wherein each of the one or more characters of the first word is determined based on location data of a respective one of the one or more first touch points.
36 . The device of claim 33 , wherein each of the one or more characters of the first word is determined based on a probability distribution over keys of the touch-sensitive keyboard proximate to a location of a respective one of the one or more first touch point.
37 . The device of claim 33 , the one or more programs further including instructions for:
creating a set of candidate corrected words; and scoring each of the candidate corrected words; wherein the second corrected word is selected from the set of candidate corrected words in accordance with the scoring.
38 . The device of claim 37 , wherein the scoring is based on a grammar rule.
39 . The device of claim 37 , wherein the scoring is based on the one or more first touch points and the one or more second touch points.
40 . The device of claim 31 , the one or more programs further including instructions for:
in response to receiving the second input:
selecting a third corrected word based on the information of the first input and based on the second input; and
replacing the first corrected word and the second word on the display with the second corrected work and the third corrected word.
41 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a device including a display and one or more input devices, cause the device to perform a method comprising:
receiving a first input, the first input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a first word via the one or more input devices; in response to receiving the first input:
displaying the first word on the display;
selecting a first corrected word different than the first word; and
replacing the first word on the display with the first corrected word;
maintaining information of the first input corresponding to the first word after replacing the first word with the first corrected word; receiving a second input corresponding to selecting one or more characters of a second word via the one or more input devices; and in response to receiving the second input:
displaying the first corrected word and the second word on the display; and
selecting a second corrected word based on the information of the first input and based on the second input; and
replacing at least one of the first corrected word and the second word on the display with the second corrected word.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
