Abstract

A method of treating atherosclerosis comprises removing AGE-modified cells from a patient. The AGE-modified cells include erythrocytes, intima cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophages, and foam cells. A variety of techniques, such as ultrasound and binding with an anti-AGE antibody, may be used to identify and remove the AGE-modified cells.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed:

         1 - 43 . (canceled)

44 . A method of treating atherosclerosis, comprising removing AGE-modified cells from a patient,
wherein the AGE-modified cells removed by destruction with ultrasound.

45 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 1.0-5.0 MHz,

46 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 3.0-4.0 MHz.

47 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the ultrasound is applied for 3-60 minutes daily for 1-20 days.

48 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the AGE-modified cells are erythrocytes.

49 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the AGE-modified cells comprise at least one cell type selected from the group consisting of intima cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, macrophages, and foam cells.

50 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the patient is a mammal.

51 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the patient is a human.

52 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the patient has Syndrome X diabetes.

53 . The method of claim 44 , further comprising testing the patient for removal of AGE-modified cells.

54 . The method of claim 53 , wherein the testing comprises measuring the levels of glycated hemoglobin A1C.

55 . The method of claim 44 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 1.0-5.0 MHz,
the ultrasound is applied for 3-60 minutes daily for 1-20 days, the AGE-modified cells are erythrocytes, and the patient is a human.

56 . A method of removing AGE-modified cells from blood, comprising damaging or destroying the AGE-modified cells with ultrasound.

57 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 1.0-5.0 MHz.

58 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 3.0-4.0 MHz.

59 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the ultrasound is applied for 3-60 minutes daily for 1-20 days.

60 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the AGE-modified cells are erythrocytes.

61 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the AGE-modified cells are removed ex vivo.

62 . The method of claim 56 , further comprising testing for removal of AGE-modified cells.

63 . The method of claim 56 , wherein the ultrasound is applied at a frequency of 1.0-5.0 MHz,
the ultrasound is applied for 3-60 minutes daily for 1-20 days, and the AGE-modified cells are erythrocytes.
