Abstract
Techniques are provided for presenting a route in a manner that emphasizes the route and provides context information. For example, a vivid color or vivid colors may be used to display the route, and pastel colors or other desaturated colors may be used for non-route context information. This may result in a map in which the vivid colors of the route stand out over the faded style of the non-route context information to emphasize the route. In this manner, the map may both emphasize the route and provide context information for the route.

21 . A method comprising:
receiving, from a user device, a request for directions from an origin to a destination; determining, using at least one processor, a route from the origin to the destination, wherein the route comprises driving directions for navigating from the origin to the destination; providing, for display together on the user device:
a route map illustrating a graphical representation of the driving directions for the route; and
a narrative portion comprising a list of actions for instructing a user through the driving directions for the route;
detecting, using the at least one processor, a selection of a particular listed action from the displayed list of actions within the narrative portion; and in response to the detected selection of the particular listed action, providing, for display on the user device, a visual indication of a position along the route that corresponds to the selected listed action.
22 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising determining, for each listed action within the narrative portion, a corresponding position along the route within the route map.
23 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising determining a geographic location corresponding to the selected listed action.
24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein providing the visual indication of the position along the route comprises placing a visual indicator within the route map at the geographic location corresponding to the selected listed action.
25 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising providing, for display with the route map and the narrative portion in response to the detected selection of the listed action, a detailed map that illustrates the selected listed action.
26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the detailed map illustrates only a single portion of the route corresponding to the selected listed action.
27 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the narrative portion comprises textual descriptions of the list of actions for instructing the user through the driving directions for the route.
28 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising receiving a second selection of a second listed action from the list of actions in the narrative portion.
29 . The method of claim 28 , further comprising providing, for display within the route map, a second visual indication of a second position along the route that corresponds to the second selected listed action.
30 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising removing, from the route map, the visual indication of the visual indication of the position that corresponds to the selected listed action.
31 . A method comprising:
receiving, from a user device, a request for directions from an origin to a destination; determining, using at least one processor, a route from the origin to the destination, wherein the route comprises driving directions for navigating from the origin to the destination; providing, for display on the user device, a route map illustrating a graphical representation of the route from the origin to the destination detecting, using the at least one processor, a selection of a position along the route within the route map; and providing, for display on the user device in response to the detected selection, a narrative action for instructing the user through a driving direction corresponding to the selected position along the route.
32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein detecting the selection of the position along the route comprises determining a position of a user interaction within the route map.
33 . The method of claim 32 , further comprising determining a route portion that corresponds to the position of the user interaction within the route map.
34 . The method of claim 31 , wherein providing the narrative action for instructing the user through the driving direction comprises providing a textual description of the driving direction.
35 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising determining the narrative action by identifying, from a narrative portion comprising a list of actions for instructing the user through driving directions along the route, a driving direction that corresponds to the selected position along the route.
36 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising providing, for display with the narrative action for instructing the user through the driving direction, a detailed map corresponding to the selected position along the route.
37 . The method of claim 36 , wherein the detailed map displays a more detailed representation of a portion of the route that corresponds to the selected position.
38 . The method of claim 37 , further comprising receiving a second selection of a second position along the route.
39 . The method of claim 38 , further comprising providing a second narrative action for instructing the user through a second driving direction corresponding to the second selected position along the route.
40 . The method of claim 39 , further comprising replacing the detailed map corresponding to the selected position along the route with a second detailed map corresponding to the second selected position along the route.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
