Infusion devices and related consumable calibration methods
Abstract
Infusion systems including infusion devices and consumables and related operating methods are provided. An exemplary method of operating an infusion device operable to deliver a fluid influencing a physiological condition to a body of a user involves a control module of the infusion device obtaining calibration data associated with a consumable coupled to the infusion device via an interface of the infusion device, determining a delivery command for delivering the fluid to the body of the user based at least in part on the calibration data, and operating a pumping mechanism to deliver the fluid from a reservoir of the consumable to the body of the user in accordance with the delivery command.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
1 . A system comprising:
a consumable including a peristaltic pumping mechanism for dispensing a fluid and a readable element maintaining calibration data characterizing a relationship between delivery of the fluid and actuation of the peristaltic pumping mechanism; and an infusion device including an interface to obtain the calibration data from the readable element, an actuation arrangement configured to actuate the peristaltic pumping mechanism and a control module coupled to the interface and the actuation arrangement to determine a delivery command based at least in part on the calibration data and operate the actuation arrangement in accordance with the delivery command.
2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:
the consumable comprises tubing to dispense the fluid in response to actuation of the peristaltic pumping mechanism; and the calibration data accounts for variations in an inner diameter of the tubing.
3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the actuation arrangement is configured to rotate a rotor of the peristaltic pumping mechanism.
4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the calibration data characterizes an amount of the fluid dispensed per revolution of the rotor.
5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the infusion device comprises a rotary shaft configured to engage the rotor of the peristaltic pumping mechanism and rotate the rotor in response to actuation of the actuation arrangement.
6 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the peristaltic pumping mechanism comprises tubing to dispense the fluid in response to rotation of the rotor.
7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the calibration data characterizes an amount of the fluid dispensed via the tubing per revolution of the rotor.
8 . The system of claim 6 , further comprising rollers coupled to the rotor and configured to compress portions of the tubing.
9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the calibration data accounts for potential variations associated with an interface between the rollers and the tubing.
10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:
the infusion device comprises a housing including a portion for receiving the consumable; and the interface is disposed proximate the portion of the housing.
11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:
the interface comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader; and the readable element comprises a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag associated with the consumable.
12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:
the interface comprises a barcode scanner; and the readable element comprises a barcode on the consumable.
13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the consumable includes a second interface coupled to the interface of the infusion device.
14 . A system comprising:
a consumable including tubing for dispensing a fluid and a readable element maintaining calibration data characterizing a relationship between delivery of the fluid and actuation of a peristaltic pumping mechanism; and an infusion device including an interface to obtain the calibration data from the readable element, an actuation arrangement configured to actuate the peristaltic pumping mechanism and a control module coupled to the interface and the actuation arrangement to determine a delivery command based at least in part on the calibration data and operate the actuation arrangement in accordance with the delivery command.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the infusion device comprises the peristaltic pumping mechanism including a rotor having rollers coupled to the rotor, wherein the rollers are configured to compress the tubing when the consumable and the infusion device are engaged.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the tubing is housed within a cutout portion of a housing of the consumable.
17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the calibration data characterizes an amount of the fluid dispensed from a reservoir via the tubing per revolution of the rotor.
18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the calibration data accounts for potential variations associated with an interface between the rollers and the tubing.
19 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the calibration data accounts for variations in an inner diameter of the tubing.
20 . An infusion device comprising:
a housing including a portion for receiving a consumable, the consumable including a conduit for fluid exiting a reservoir contained within the consumable; an interface proximate the portion of the housing to obtain calibration data from the consumable; an actuation arrangement contained within the housing and configured to actuate a peristaltic pumping mechanism operable to dispense the fluid via the conduit; and a control module coupled to the interface and the actuation arrangement to determine a delivery command based at least in part on the calibration data and operate the actuation arrangement in accordance with the delivery command.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
