Abstract

In certain aspects, the present invention provides compositions and methods for increasing red blood cell and/or hemoglobin levels in vertebrates, including rodents and primates, and particularly in humans.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 32 . (canceled)

33 . A method for identifying an agent that stimulates production of red blood cells, the method comprising:
 a) identifying a test agent that binds to activin or a ligand-binding domain of an ActRIIa polypeptide; and b) evaluating the effect of the agent on the levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin, and/or red blood cell precursor levels.

34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of non-peptidyl organic molecules, peptides, polypeptides, peptidomimetics, sugars, hormones, and nucleic acid molecules.

35 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is identified by a biochemical method.

36 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is identified by a mechanism based assay.

37 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is evaluated in a cell based assay.

38 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is evaluated in an in vivo assay.

39 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the agent is evaluated in an in vitro assay.

40 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the ActRIIa polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2.

41 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the ActRIIa polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 3.

42 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the ActRIIa polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 7.

43 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the ActRIIa polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 12.

44 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the ActRIIa polypeptide consists of the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 7.
