Maintaining files in a retained file system
Abstract
To maintain files in a retained file system, a run-time error detection code (EDC) is generated for a retained file. The run-time EDC is generated on the basis of at least one of entire content and metadata of the retained file. Further, the run-time EDC is compared with a validation EDC associated with the retained file to identify a corruption of the retained file. The validation EDC is generated at an instance of placing the retained file in the retained FS. Furthermore, the validation EDC is based on at least one of entire content and metadata of the retained file. Based on the comparison, an original version of the retained file may is restored from a trusted backup system.

16 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions executable by a processing resource, the non-transitory computer readable medium comprising:
instructions to store data at a file system; instructions to store a backup copy of the data at a storage system; instructions to, while the data is being stored at the file system, compute a validation checksum on entire content of the data and store the validation checksum; and instructions to perform an integrity check comprising:
instructions to compute a run-time checksum on entire content of the data stored at the file system,
instructions to perform a comparison between the run-time checksum and the validation checksum, and
instructions to restore the data from the backup copy if the comparison indicates that the run-time checksum does not match the validation checksum.
17 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions to store data and the instructions to store the backup copy are configured to be performed simultaneously.
18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the storage system and the file system are separate and communicate over a network.
19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions to perform the integrity check is scheduled at predefined periodic intervals.
20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the data is metadata of a file.
21 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the data is entire content of a file.
22 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the data is associated with a retention policy.
23 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the file system is a retention file system and wherein the instructions to store the data at the file system changes the properties of the data to non-modifiable.
24 . A method comprising:
storing data at a file system; storing a backup copy of the data at a storage system; while the data is being stored at the file system, computing a validation checksum on entire content of the data and storing the validation checksum; and during an integrity check:
computing a run-time checksum on entire content of the data stored at the file system,
performing a comparison between the run-time checksum and the validation checksum, and
restoring the data from the backup copy when the comparison indicates that the run-time checksum does not match the validation checksum.
25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the storing of the data and the storing of the backup copy are performed simultaneously.
26 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the storage system and the file system are separate and communicate over a network.
27 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the integrity check is scheduled at predefined periodic intervals.
28 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the data is metadata of a file.
29 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the data is entire content of a file.
30 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the data is associated with a retention policy.
31 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the file system is a retention file system that changes the properties of the data to non-modifiable during the storing of the data.
32 . A system comprising:
a processing resource; and a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause the processing resource to:
store data at a file system,
store a backup copy of the data at a storage system,
compute a validation checksum on entire content of the data while the data is being stored at the file system and store the validation checksum,
perform an integrity check by computing a run-time checksum on entire content of the data stored at the file system and comparing the run-time checksum and the validation checksum, and
restore the data from the backup copy if comparing indicates that the run-time checksum does not match the validation checksum.
33 . The system of claim 32 , wherein the processing resource performs storing of the data and storing of the backup copy simultaneously.
