Use of Short Chain Fatty Acids in Cancer Prevention

Abstract

The invention relates to compositions for preventing or delaying the onset of hepatocellular cancer. The compositions of the invention may comprise short chain fatty acids. The compositions of the invention may also comprise probiotic bacteria. The compositions of the invention include compositions for preventing or delaying the onset of hepatocellular cancer by treating or preventing liver inflammation, liver disease, and precancerous lesions.

1 . A method for treating a disease in a subject, the method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising at least one short chain fatty acid. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the short chain fatty acid is selected from the group consisting of: formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid. isobutyric acid, butyric acid, isovaleric acid, valeric acid, isocaproic acid, caproic acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, and pyruvic acid. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein said composition is administered in combination with another therapeutic agent. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered orally. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the composition is administered with food or drink. 
     
     
         7 . A therapeutic a composition comprising at least two short chain fatty acids. 
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 7 , wherein the at least two short chain fatty acids is selected from the group consisting of: formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, isobutyric acid, butyric acid, isovaleric acid, valeric acid, isocaproic acid, caproic acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, and pyruvic acid. 
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 7 , wherein said composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. 
     
     
         10 . The composition of  claim 9 , wherein said excipient comprises at least one prebiotic. 
     
     
         11 . The composition of  claim 7 , wherein said composition is in combination with another therapeutic agent. 
     
     
         12 . The composition of  claim 7 , wherein the composition is formulated for oral administration. 
     
     
         13 . The composition of  claim 12 , wherein the composition is formulated to be administered with food or drink. 
     
     
         14 . A kit for treating a disease in a subject, said kit containing a composition comprising at least two short chain fatty acids.
