Abstract

Methods and apparatus for sealing and encapsulating components on and within a multi-piece insert are set forth herein. In some embodiments, an ophthalmic lens is cast molded from a silicone hydrogel and the component includes a sealed and encapsulated multi-piece insert portion.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
What is claimed is:

1 . A multi-piece insert configured for placement within an ophthalmic lens, the multi-piece insert comprising:
an insert back curve piece; an insert front curve piece; at least one mold feature formed upon one or both interior surfaces of the insert back curve piece and insert front curve piece and situated such that the at least one mold feature creates a central cavity and a peripheral cavity between the insert back piece and insert front piece, wherein the central cavity is located at least partially in the optical zone of the ophthalmic lens and the peripheral cavity is located at least partially outside of the optical zone of the ophthalmic lens and the central and peripheral cavities are separated by a seal; an optical component disposed within the central cavity; and an electrical component disposed within the peripheral cavity.

2 . The multi-piece insert of claim 1 , wherein the optical component comprises a variable optic lens.

3 . The multi-piece insert of claim 1 , wherein the variable optic lens comprises an electroactive liquid meniscus lens.

4 . The multi-piece insert of claim 1 , wherein the electrical component comprises an embedded energy source.

5 . The multi-piece inset of claim 1 , wherein the electrical component is encapsulated and isolated from an environment into which the ophthalmic lens is placed.

6 . The multi-piece insert of claim 1 , wherein the energy source is placed in electrical communication with the optical component and is operable to actuate the optical component.

7 . The multi-piece insert of claim 1 , wherein the at least one mold feature functions as one or both of a side of a glue seal region or a surface upon which electrodes may be deposited.
