Abstract
The present invention relates to novel boron cluster compounds and their use as sodium channel blockers. The invention also provides methods for making and using the compounds.

1 . A compound of Formula (I):
wherein
B is a carborane;
R 1 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl;
R 2 and R 3 are independently chosen from hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, and substituted hydrocarbyl;
and R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 may form one or more rings.
2 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are hydrocarbyl.
3 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the carborane is a closo or nido carborane.
4 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is chosen from —CH 2 —, —CH(CH 3 )—, —C(CH 3 ) 2 —, —CH 2 CH 2 —, —CH 2 CH(CH 3 )—, and —CH(CH 2 CH 3 )—.
5 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 2 and R 3 are independently chosen from methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl.
6 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 and R 2 or R 1 and R 3 form a ring chosen from a five membered ring, a six membered ring, or a seven membered ring.
7 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is Formula (I)(a):
wherein B is a carborane having two carbon atoms configured meta to each other ([1,7-C 2 B 10] ), or para ([1,12-C 2 B 10 ]) to each other.
8 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises Formula (I)(b):
wherein B is a carborane.
9 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises Formula (I)(c):
wherein B is a carborane.
10 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises (I)(d):
wherein B is a carborane.
11 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is comprises Formula (I)(e):
wherein B is a carborane.
12 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises Formula (I)(f):
wherein B is a carborane.
13 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound comprises Formula (I)(g):
wherein B is a carborane.
